A Modern Eden: Back-to-School Giveaway

I like funky, different stuff.  I like to go outside of the norm. So when I heard about A Modern Eden, I was excited.

When a designer starts a family, one of the first things they think of is what to do with the nursery.  Find a lack of products that met our design aesthetic, A Modern Eden was born. A Modern Eden is a new children’s design brand created for style savvy parents that want something beautiful to put in their children’s rooms that they can be proud of.  We currently feature three unique, hand screen-printed posters printed on French Pop-Tone paper (they use only hydroelectric power that they create!), two totes made from 100% recycled cotton, animal flashcards printed with Digi-Print for a tactile experience, and an iPhone app titled  “Speak, Piggy!” designed to teach young children the names of animals and their sounds.

There are posters and then there are works of art. A Modern Eden posters would most definitely be classified under the second category. The 18” x 24” posters are custom screen-printed with five colors on super-colorful French Paper.

Speak, Piggy! is an educational app that gives the animals in the Modern Eden universe a voice––like oinks and moos and quacks. And your child will also learn the names of the animals, the spellings, and the different habitats where they live. Did we mention it’s really pretty? Let the learning bee-gin.

If you’re going to save the earth, you might as well do it in style. Our 100% recycled cotton tote has a wallpaper patterned print of A Modern Eden’s tree icon. On the back, there’s an embroidery of our brandmark.

C is for Cow will playfully teach your little one recognition and phonetics for each letter in the alphabet. From antelope to zebra, there’s an animal that starts with each letter. The best part? Associating the animal with the letter will help your child remember the alphabet. Learning couldn’t be more fun (or beautiful)!

As kids go back to school and use the family PC for homework and play, keep these safety and security tips in mind:

1)      Protect Your Family’s Personal Info – Families today need comprehensive security protection. McAfee SecurityCenter  from Dell  features McAfee Active Protection™ technology which instantly analyzes and blocks new threats in milliseconds so there’s no dangerous gaps in protection.

2)      Hall Monitors are Needed – Parents should always monitor children’s use of the Internet. Consider using a family protection software, which lets adults say “yes” to children’s online interests.  It keeps children of all ages safe from exposure to inappropriate content, social networking risks, strangers, and other online threats.

3)      Don’t Talk to Strangers -Teach kids to ignore emails and instant messages from people they don’t know.

4)      Nothing is “Free” – Remind children to avoid free downloads like screensavers, surveys and online club registrations as these “freebies” can include hidden spyware and adware programs.

5)      Teamwork is the Key – Work with your child to discuss boundaries of what is appropriate and what isn’t. Sign a pledge together to ensure ultimate protection. You will find an example pledge here.

6)      Monitor  Time – Set time limits for online surfing and ban late-night use.

Did you know?

  • Almost 93% of teens use the Internet, yet 63% of them know how to hide what they’re doing online from their parents (McAfee and Harris Interactive)
  • About 42% of youth report exposure to inappropriate content
  • With cybercrime on the rise, recent research shows that 62% of moms are just as worried about their teenagers’ online safety as they are about drunk driving.

Cupcake Camp OC

This past Sunday, I attended the first annual Cupcake Camp OC in Irvine, CA.  I went with my mom and Angry Kid in order to support my friend Kristin from Meringue Bake Shop.  Of course, I was going to eat cupcakes too, duh.

I arrived at the location where it was being held, a few minutes after it was supposed to start.  Wow, there was a line, a HUGE line. I guess everyone in Orange County loves cupcakes as much as I do.

The event was very crowded and got full very fast.  I saw many many many different types of cupcakes, but I was a good girl and only ate Kristin’s.  I loved her Orange Crush Cupcakes, which are now prize winners.  She won the prize for “Best Orange County Themed Cupcake.”  It also didn’t help that they were quite delicious.

Kristin said that her cupcakes ran out very fast.  I’m glad that I was able to grab one or two before they were all gone. I heart cupcakes.

Building A Skatepark

I’m a huge fan of skateboarding.  I know, it is quite shocking.  I love how much art and individualism that skateboarders put into their sport.  It is not easy to do those tricks.  I love going to skateboard competitions and seeing the pros compete.  Luckily, I live in Southern California which is home to many skateboarders, skateboard companies, and skateboard competitions.

I was able to attend all three days of the Maloof Money Cup last year at the OC Fair.  But unfortunately, I will be out of town this year.  What is the Maloof Money Cup?

The Maloof Money Cup, presented by Vans, returns to the OC Fair in Costa Mesa, Calif. August 4-8. With nearly $450,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, the World’s Greatest Skateboarding Event will feature the VOLCOM Street Pro, Carl’s Jr. Pro Vert Championships, World Industries Amateur Championships, Women’s Pro Street, Tech Deck Best Trick Contest, Masters of Street and Vert, and a 50,000-square-foot Festival Village featuring skateboarding activities for all ages, autograph signings and live music.

I can be there for the LIVE event but I wanted to go and check out the course yesterday. They custom build the course from scratch every year, while the OC Fair is going on.  It is amazing how fast the arena can be transformed with the right crew.  I was amazed to see what they are doing this year.  It is very “Orange County” with palm tress, waves, and almost a downtown beach feel to it.  I think people will love what they have done.  And of course, I took some pictures.

I was able to get some great photographs last year while the event was LIVE and going on.  Be sure to check out my posts from last year also.  I wish I could be there, but NYC is where I’ll be.  I will have to check out some of the footage over the weekend.

Angry Kid got bit by the photo bug

I have a camera with me, most days.  It may be my iPhone, my SLR, or my Flip.  I haven’t found the perfect point and shoot yet.  I’m picky and things seem to break on me.  Angry Kid is at the point in his blog stardom that he doesn’t want to be in the pictures.  He wants to be taking the pictures.

While we were driving to the mall today, Angry Kid started digging in my purse.  He was looking for my iPhone.  He should realize by now that my iPhone is plugged into the charger while driving. I love my iPhone but wow, the battery runs out fast. Angry Kid then got a hold of my camera.  He kept asking to take pictures with it.  I think my mom freaked.  I just shrugged and told him that he could take pictures.  I think that he is sooo used to me taking pictures, that he is figured out how to handle the camera.  By the way, he had my Nikon D60 DSLR, which is a smaller DSLR and easier for him to handle it.  He even put the wrist strap around his tiny little wrist.

So tonight, when I got home, I downloaded my pictures from an event that we went to.  I had forgotten about Angry Kid using my camera.  I was cracking up at some of the pictures.  I’m a complete control freak so I edited them for color, etc. but the angles and such are what Angry Kid took.  He was sitting in his carseat in my car while taking the pictures.

Angry Kid may not be a photography prodigy, but he’s trying.  I had the camera set to auto, so it was a bit easy for him to focus it, etc.  If a 5 year old can use a DSLR, anyone can.
