A Girl’s Day Out and BBQ at BJ’s Restaurants

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and BJ’s Restaurants  but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #BJsrestaurants http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO

I wonder what has been seen through the lens of these?

Last weekend, Kelly and I had a girl’s day out. We started in the late afternoon at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Have you ever been there? It was our first trip and I’m not sure if we were very prepared. It was enormous! I had to take a picture of all of these awesome cameras for sale!

My beach parking today. Such an ummm interesting beach.

And then we wound up in Venice Beach. Venice is quite an interesting town. We walked around for a few hours and got some sun. Well, I got a little too much sun. Somebody (me) forgot to put on sunscreen. I had hot arms and a bright red nose. Thankfully, I didn’t take a photograph. I was looking quite scary.

But after trolling around in Los Angeles all afternoon, Kelly and I were hungry. We wanted some real food besides the random stuff that we had snacked on during the day. So we headed to BJ’s Restaurant, which was right along the freeway in Huntington Beach.

Big Poppa Smokers' BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich at BJ's
BJ's Blue Ribbon Big Poppa Smokers' BBQ

Now you are probably thinking, doesn’t BJ’s sell pizza? Well of course they do, but BJ’s has a very large menu with a variety of items. We actually go there often, and everyone usually gets something different. But on our girl’s day out, Kelly and I decided to get some Big Poppas’ BBQ Specialty Menu which BJ’s is currently featuring. Maybe it’s because my husband has been watching all of those BBQ competition shows on TV lately, because a BBQ sandwich sounded delicious!

Bj's Pork Sandwich

Kelly and I both ordered the Big Poppa Smoker’s BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. It was delicious! Kelly and I differed on our choice of fries but we both loved everything. They give you a choice of three sauces with your Blue Ribbon BBQ and I chose the mild. It was super yummy! The pork sandwich had crunchy fried onions on top that were delightful also. I highly recommend it! The serving size for the sandwiches were quite generous and we had some left to take home. But of course, we had to save our appetites for dessert, right? Because you can’t go to BJ’s without ordering a pizookie. And yes, it was as delicious as it looks!

Pizookie from BJ's Pizza

And you are probably wondering, where are the cute girls that had a fun day out? Well I was quite sunburned but I got a covert photograph of Kelly snapping a picture of her food. We chose a BJ’s location that was pretty dark {romantic, I guess} inside and it was impossible to get photographs. We tried all types of angles etc. to get photos. I think the people across from us were probably wondering what the heck we were doing.

@According2Kelly photographing her food

Yum! Now I’m craving BBQ! Those sandwiches and pizookie look so good that I want some now!

What do you get when you go to BJ’s Restaurant?

How To Pack For Summer Camp

My son came home a little over a week ago from two weeks of summer camp at Catalina Island Camps. It was his first time at extended stay overnight camp, and I wanted him to be prepared accordingly. Because I’m a bit obsessive-compulsive, and I like organization.

How To Pack For Summer Camp

1. Checking The Camp’s Website/Handbook for Their Packing List

Catalina Island Camps had a detailed packing list in their handbook. I followed it exactly and my son didn’t need anything else while at camp. Well, except an extra pair of flip flops because he broke his, and I got a phone call the night before parent’s day.

The Packing List from Catalina Island Camps

Clothing Toiletries
1 jacket for evening Toothbrush and toothpaste
2 sweatshirts Soap, shampoo
7 t-shirts Lotion
7 pair underwear Sunscreen (SPF 30+, waterproof)
3 swim suits Lip balm (with sunscreen)
1 rash guard or UV protection shirt Hairbrush
4 pair shorts
2 pair jeans or long pants Equipment
1 pair pajamas Canteen or leak-proof water bottle
1 hat with brim Daypack
Flashlight (with extra batteries)
Footwear Stationery supplies
7 pair socks
1 pair tennis/running shoes Optional Items
1 pair sandals/aqua socks for beach use Inexpensive camera
1 pair supportive shoes for hiking Underwater camera
Playing cards, simple board games
Books
Bedding/Towels Wetsuit (spring or shorty; camp has a supply campers may use while at camp)
1 Sleeping bag
1 Pillow
2 towels (one for bathing, one for beach)
1 laundry bag

Packing For Summer Camp

2. Lay Out Everything To Be Packed

I pulled everything from the packing list two days before my son left for camp, and made piles on our family room floor. I then sat my son down and we went through everything, and I also explained why he needed specific items. If he was a little older than eight years old, I would have had him collect the items throughout the house.

As we packed everything in his duffle bag, I then asked him to point out where stuff was. I said things like, “where is your sunscreen, or where are your swim trunks?” He was able to locate everything in the bag.

eBags Packing Cubes to Organize a Suitcase

3. Keep Items Organized

Last summer before I went to New York, I bought these eBags packing cubes to organize my clothing. I had several events to attend was able to categorize my socks/underwear, dresses, and workout clothing. I also used them when we went camping in Yosemite.

I paired up my son’s things in a set of the packing cubes. I organized everything by shorts/t-shirts, swim gear, pajamas, socks/underwear, and other random things. I knew that my son would not keep everything in the packing cubes once he arrived at camp, but that he would be able to find things when he initially got there.

Label Everything That You Have Packed For Camp

4. Label Everything

I always use Mabel’s Labels to label all of my son’s clothing and school supplies. For the items that I didn’t use a Mabel’s Label on, I used a red or black Sharpie pen. EVERYTHING came home with my son. I love the bright and awesome labels from Mabel’s. They stay on forever and are also dishwasher safe.

I also made luggage tags for my son’s duffle bag, sleeping bag, and laundry bag with pictures from prior travels by adding text and then laminating them.

Pack Tons of Sunscreen For Camp

5. Pack Lots of Sunscreen

I know that sunscreen was mentioned on the packing list, but I wanted to put emphasis on this item. Sunscreen is very important. These kids are outside running around in the sun most of their days at camp.

I bought the mega pack of sunscreen from Costco. It had the spray-on sunscreen, liquid sunscreen to rub on, and also lip stuff. I pretty much covered all my bases. I put labels on all of the individual containers of sunscreen, and then put everything in a freezer bag. I can’t say enough about the 1-gallon freezer bags. I use freezer bags for organizing everything in my life.

Water Bottle for Camp

6. Make Sure You Have A Re-Usable Water Bottle

Another item on the packing list, but also very important. We had a package of water bottles (not naming the brand because umm the bottle broke, but you can see the brand in the picture) in our garage. So I grabbed one, and applied a label to it. When we visited our son a week into camp, he told us that his water bottle had broke. I noticed the flip top cap was no longer working. I suggest sending a water bottle with a screw off type lid because kids are hard on things.

Everything Packed and Ready For Camp

7. Make Sure Your Camper Can Carry His Own Belongings

My son only had two large items to bring with him to camp, his packed duffle bag and his sleeping bag.  My husband shoved his pillow into the duffle bag, and ended up fastening down the sleeping bag to the straps on the bag. I bought a duffle bag equipped with wheels so that my son could pull the bag, because it was heavy.

All grown up on off to Catalina Island for 2 weeks of summer camp @catalinaislandcamps

And then….after you spend all that time organizing and helping your son pack for summer camp..you go visit a week later on Parent’s Day. And you see his things somewhat in the same place, but not quite organized.

My son's duffle bag while at camp

And a week after Parent’s Day at camp, we picked the kid up in San Pedro, intact. He may have come home a bit more mature, with a mustache.

Home from Camp

But you are probably wondering if his duffle bag came back organized?

Duffle Bag Post-Camp

Everything wasn’t quite as neat as before, but everything made it home. Yippee! So of course, I have to add some tips on “How To Un-Pack Post Camp”

How To Un-Pack Post Camp. Unload duffle bag on garage floor. Section off items: 1. shoes 2. laundry 3. trash 4. stuff to put away 5. crafts 6. other. Get it done as soon as you get home. Because there are slightly wet clothes hiding in there. Everything s

How To Un-Pack Post Camp

  1. Do not take the camp gear into the house (in case of bugs, creatures, and other things that might invade your house)
  2. Section off the items (shoes, laundry, trash, stuff to put away, crafts, treasures, and other)
  3. Un-pack as soon as you get home, because items might be wet
  4. Start doing laundry
  5. Clean-up shoes
  6. Go through trinkets, crafts, etc.
  7. Put everything away for next year

I will be referring to my own blog post next year when we have to pack for camp again! Yes, we plan on sending our son back to Catalina Island Camps again next year.

Disclosure: I won two weeks at Catalina Island Camps for my son. Everything mentioned in my post (products, etc.) were purchased with my very own money, or found somewhere in my house. All opinions and photographs are mine. I’m writing this really long random disclosure because you were probably wondering if this was some sort of sponsored post while reading through it.

Renegade Summer Trail Series #2

In a one week time frame, I signed up for two separate races without any notice. This is totally not me, never spontaneous at all…. But on the 4th of July, I signed up to race that morning, and last Thursday, I got talked into doing an evening trail race via Twitter.

Hello There Starting Line! Did my first Trail Race ever @renegaderace Summer Trail Run Series. Totally last minute.

Of course, I haven’t been running nearly as much lately. But I told Heather that if my parents got to my house in time to get my son, I would do the trail race with her.

And so I did. My parents got to my house just in time, I was already dressed for the race, and I left immediately after my parents did. I rushed to the registration table and signed up for the Renegade Races Summer Trail Series #2.

Let me just preface this..I hadn’t run a 5-mile run for quite some time, and I don’t do trail running, as in never ever. I’m not sure if I have ever actually “gone out for a trail run” let alone, an entire trail race. I do not like dirt hitting the back of my legs, so I put on some compression socks to race in.

Hills at Renegade Trail SeriesPhoto via Heather. Awesome commentary added via Me.

And then we were off…Heather got to the starting line just in time. We pretty much ran side-by-side the entire race. But there was some walking, yes walking. I think this “trail race” should have been called “run…run…walk…hike…run down hill…walk..hike…run down hill…etc.” because I did a lot of that. I didn’t know how much hiking was involved in a trail race. I had flashbacks of all of the hiking that I did in Yosemite last year.

Luckily about halfway through the race, after we had climbed all of those awesome hills {not so awesome, really}, I spied relief, in the form of an Otter Pop. Kelly, her kids, and even some of the neighbor kids had hiked up to a spot on the trail, and were handing out wonderful frozen Otter Pops to all of the runners.

Otter Pops via @according2kelly at Renegade Races Trail SeriesPhoto via Heather.

After re-fueling with a grape Otter Poop, we continued on our way, which was mostly downhill. It was a beautiful evening, even with the weird icky weather that had been happening all morning. It wasn’t too hot for a run, and it wasn’t really chilly either, especially for a 6:15pm start.

@AngryJulie Trail RunningPhoto via Heather.

Can you already tell that most of the photos are via Heather? I tucked my phone into my SPIbeltI advised Heather after I saw her taking photos with her phone that I would be “using” her photos for my blog post also. Luckily, she is very efficient and posted about the run before the weekend even started.

I survived the race, yippee! My very first Trail Race. It was a bit hard but I totally did not know what to expect either. I knew that the area was quite “hilly” because I’ve mountain biked there before. And obviously, I would wear trail running shoes next time. But I did have fun!

I know, crazy right? I guess I’m turning into that “sure, why not, I will try that” type of runner. Or maybe I’m just crazy? But it was a super fun experience running with Heather, because she knows my speed, which is slooooow!

Post @renegaderace with @hmgiraffy and @stridingmom. Perfect weather for a race tonight.
Heather, Me, and Sheila Post-Race.

We are all smiles because we had just finished throwing down some burgers post-race. Seriously, a race that ends with a BBQ, hell yeah! When you register for the race, you get the choice of either a race t-shirt or a BBQ dinner ticket. Nice options! And totally worth the money. Just don’t eat any Cheetos that Sheila may give you, just sayin’!

Would I be crazy enough to do this all over again? YES! I am that insane. I’m kinda sad that I missed the first race, actually. But good news, there is a 3rd and final race in this series, August 1st!

Summer Showers

After an awkward humid and somewhat rainy day yesterday in Orange County, we headed to the pool at 5pm…

Taking advantage of our HOA (Homeowner’s Association) benefits, we headed to the lagoon, only to find it closed for a private party. Luckily, there is a second lagoon nearby. Kelly brought her kiddos and even an additional kid (neighbor).

The kids loved the whole idea of a swimming pool with a beach-like feel with the sand. They built sandcastles and we didn’t have to worry about monsterous waves coming by.

Making sandcastles at the lagoon.

The husband brought his Weber Q and we (he) cooked up some hotdogs on the grill. We hadn’t used the grill since our Yosemite trip last year and it fired up with no problems at all. I love this tiny BBQ. It is perfect for summer. Kelly arrived with an assortment of regular and bacon-wrapped hotdogs. The bacon-wrapped hotdogs were delicious.

Hotdogs, and even bacon wrapped hotdogs on the grill.

After the kids had swam for a few hours, we decided that it was getting a little too cold and windy, so we forced them out of the water. And because we are awesome parents, we bathe our children. A group bath at the pool showers is good enough for us during summer.

Summer showers, the only kind you need.

We were joking after we had left the pool that it was almost like we had a mini day of camping. And then I found this box of S’mores granola bars on the floorboard of the car. Seriously, made me laugh.
What's a summer night without S'mores?

And then the night ended at 7-11, for Slurpees. Trying organizing a herd of children and attempting to find shoes and shirts for them was quite a process, but we managed to get Slurpees for everyone and make it out the door.

Slurpee stop.

The weather is still quite ugly outside today, and ugh the heat and humidity. I swear it feels like we are in Florida today. So weird. Hopefully, I can fit a run in tonight. It has been awhile since I ran. Especially when I just found that I’m doing a half marathon in a few weeks, and I totally haven’t trained.

Wordless Wednesday: Summer Chores

Trying to think of activities for the kid on this camp-less week. I decided to turn chores into activities. We took the dogs for a walk. Of course he got to walk the calm one who pretty much walks with a cadence. I got to walk the wild dog who kept getting caught up in the leash. But we survived 1.5 miles in the summer heat.

The Fourth of July, The 2013 Edition

For the past few years, I’ve gotten up early and made the trek to Huntington Beach, to run the Surf City 5K on the 4th of July. But my son was away at camp, my usual running partner wasn’t doing the race, so I didn’t sign up. The day before, I had a bit of panic and doubt about not signing up for the race. It’s a tradition, and I should do it, right? And then shiny things distracted me.

So I decided to get up super early on the actual 4th, put on my finest “Patriotic Wear”, drag my husband out of bed, and walk to the start of the race. Yes, a local race where I could walk to the start, and even register that morning.

I'm a wee bit patriotic. Red @runteamsparkle skirt, red/white/blue @procompression socks, and you can't see in the pic but a blue/white @nuunhydration singlet! #5K #teamsparkle

I’m not sure if I have ever signed up for a race right before it started. I’m a huge control freak, and I like to over-plan. But I went for it, and signed up for the race. I brought a check, paid, and got my bib and a t-shirt.

5K done. A PR. My first race since the OC 1/2. My outfit got me tons of attention. I love this @nuunhydration singlet and @runteamsparkle skirt. #teamsparkle

My husband knows me well, and took a pre-race photo. I wore a navy blue baseball hat that I had in my closet, my Nuun singlet, a red Sparkle Athletic skirt, 4th of July compression socks from ProCompression, and my Brooks PureFlow 2. A friend commented on my outfit, “You are truly the most fashionable runner I know”. I like to dress for the moment, umm I mean, race.

4th of July Race Start

And just like that, it was on….

I know you can’t tell from the photo…but it was about 7:15am when the race started, and it was hot and swampy out. Seriously, sticky!

But I went on my way…running…just running…

About 1.5 miles in there was a water station. I stopped but unfortunately, they were not quite ready yet. I probably lost at least a minute waiting for a cup, silly me. I was only being measured by the Garmin on my wrist, and not a timing chip, but obviously, I wanted to improve my 5K time.

I ended up improving my time (PR) by about a minute, but unfortunately it could have been more, but it was fun.

Oh, and I saw Heather and her husband before the race, and also apparently she saw me during the race. Heather was nice enough to take this picture of me running. Obviously, I had switched the hat around because it was so swampy outside.

Running on The 4th of JulyPhoto via Heather

After the race, we made our way home, another 1.25 miles back. Woot! It was almost like I did a 10K that day with all of the extra mileage from walking.

After we got home, we decided to walk some more so we headed to the grocery store. We needed a few more things to take to a party later.

Watermelon fruit bowl.

I found a picture of a similiar fruit bowl on Pinterest. My husband and I re-created it for the party we went to. The fruit was so fresh and tasted awesome.

And if I wasn’t busy enough, I realized that I promised a friend some patriotic bunting a few weeks prior. Totally not joking. So I pulled out the sewing machine and started cursing, I mean working on it.

Last minute 4th of July bunting

We had some great food, and some awesome illegal fireworks that night! We did miss our little one though. I’m pretty sure that he was probably having a blast at Catalina Island Camps.

How was your 4th? Did you do anything fun? Did you eat/try a great new dish?

Please share!
