Our First Day in New Orleans

Last Wednesday morning, I got up at the crack o’ dawn, 3:15am.  Tiffany had scheduled our flight to New Orleans at 7:05am in San Diego.  I was able to find my way to Tiffany’s house in the dark, and we made it to the airport.  I think we were both half asleep as we descended on our way to Las Vegas, and then New Orleans.  We checked into our hotel, Chateau Bourbon, and then headed towards The French Quarter.  The main reason that we headed towards The French Quarter is to go to the French Market, and more specifically Café Du Mondé.  We were in search of beignets.

Cafe Du Monde BeignetsWhile we savored our beignets, we enjoyed some local musicians and a little “street performance”.  It was the perfect combo for a warm afternoon in New Orleans, and our first day of the trip.

Local Musicians performing in The French Market, New OrleansWe were in no hurry so we took some time and went sight seeing in The French Quarter.  You can see some of the pictures that I took below.

Random knick knacks in New OrleansNew Orleans is a pretty eclectic city.  Tiffany looks awesome in sunglasses, and well, you never know what kind of knick knacks that you may find in all of those tourist spots along the way.

We took a different way back and walked down Canal Street, which has stores and restaurants along both sides of the street.  And the best part was the streetcars going down the middle of the street.  I never got a chance to ride the streetcars, but they only cost $1.25 each way.

Tiffany and I arrived back at our room, and Ciaran had arrived.  We all decided that we wanted a really good meal on our first night in town. Per the recommendation of Alexandra, we headed towards Galatoire’s Restaurant.  The food and service were amazing.  We all finished our dinner off with a dessert.  I had warm pecan cake with coffee ice cream.

Dessert was soo delicious. This is officially #foodcationThe restaurant was in the middle of Bourbon Street, which was wide awake with activity when we left.  It was quite entertaining.  The only thing that I could compare it to, was Las Vegas on steroids…

I just had to include the last picture, for shock value.  It was the perfect ending to a really long day.  We headed back to the hotel and went to bed.  It was a great first day in New Orleans.

I will be back with more stories and photos, later this week…

Wordless Wednesday: Inspirational Parking Stalls

The Camp is a non-traditional shopping center in Orange County.  Not only does The Camp have retail stores, but it hosts educational events, lifestyle related art shows and exhibits, along with other special events.  But there is one thing that always sticks out to me when I visit The Camp.  I love their parking lot.  A wall backs up to the parking lot, and there are letters spelling out, C-O-M-M-U-N-I-T-Y.  There are also little phrases that are painted at the edges of their parking stalls.

I traveled there early before The Camp was open, and got some pictures of this really rad, yes I said, “RAD” parking lot.

The Camp in Costa Mesa, Parking LotThese are the signs at the location, that spell out, “Community”.

But really, these little sayings on the parking stalls are what make me smile, when I visit the camp.

Makeup is not my forte

I’m a hot mess when it comes to makeup. Seriously, I think I’ve been using the same products and colors for at least five years. There is no variety in my makeup bag.  I go with the taupe and purple color groups.  I usually use bland taupe shadows paired with purples.  I sometimes add in a little silver or gray.  My blush container is cracking and falling apart.  It is embarrassing.

Angry Julie's Make-Up Bag

My makeup bag was a gift with purchase from Bath & Body Works.  I have some Bobbie Brown shadows, paired with random things.  I should call it the “blogger’s makeup bag”.  I think many of the items thrown in here were given to me, free at events.  Yes, my swag makeup.  Some of the colors don’t even match my skin tones or colors.  How sad is that?

I recently hit up the MAC Cosmetics counter at Nordstrom for a new lipstick.  I have lost all my lipsticks so I depend on Carmex and Burt’s Bees for my lips.  Both of those items are clear, as in, NO COLOR.  I told the salesgirl that I wanted to stay away from the bottom row of lipsticks.  She laughed at me.  Seriously, the entire bottom row was my usual color palette, also known as “the taupe lipstick group”.  I told her that I wanted something brighter.  I tried on about five colors and kept asking for something BRIGHTER.  I finally found a color that I like, “Party Line”.

I took a picture of it, but our bedroom is DARK, like really dark….so bear with me.

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick

It is great.  I love how long lasting it is too.  It is pretty dark, but if I blot it a little, it gets much lighter.  I can totally wear it in the daytime too.  Before I paid for my lipstick, the salesgirl asked me, “Is there anything else I can help you with?”  I laughed and said, “Umm that is going to take a few hours.  I will be back soon.  I need a complete makeup makeover.  I haven’t bought proper makeup or had my colors done for YEARS.”

Am I the only one with this problem?

Is there help for me?

New glasses and a fresh injury

I’m heading to the Mom 2.0 Summit Conference in New Orleans on Wednesday of this week.  I’m leading a round table discussion on Online Privacy and Anonymity on Friday.  So of course, I’m in panic mode.  I couldn’t get to the hairdresser fast enough this week.  I’m a total slacker and my hair needed to be done, like bad.  I got some new color and a sassy cut.  I had Richard make a little more choppy.  I also had my bangs cut.  I’m attempting to cover up my wrinkles that are starting to appear on my forehead.  Angry Husband said that they (the wrinkles) are starting to look angry, go figure.

At the beginning of the month, the calendar year for our health insurance started over.  I was very excited because I could get new glasses.  It has been three years since I got new glasses.  I was way overdue.  I also had to have an exam.  I found out the my eyes are EXTREMELY dry.  I already knew that.  They’ve been dry since I had Lasik surgery 10+ years ago.  Yes, I had eye surgery but my eyes are getting worse.  I’m afraid that if I go in for a touch-up, my eyes are going to get worse.

Angry Julie with New Glasses

I decided to be a bit bold.  Ok, I’m always bold, but I’m pretty conservative about some things.  I decided to get white framed eyeglasses by Tiffany. Yes, they even came in a little blue box.  I don’t think that Angry Husband likes them very much. But wow, I can see so much better now.  It has taken some time to adjust to the new prescription.

My mom watches Angry Kid on Sundays, and I got a phone call from her while working.  She told me that he crashed his scooter in a concrete light device at the park near our house.  She said that he cut his fingers really bad on a vent on the light.  I had to call Angry Husband to go and save the day.  Angry Husband and my mom took Angry Kid to the ER.  He had an x-ray, and did not need stitches or glue.  It looks like his had some deep scrapes and a little road rash.  He got sent home with some band-aids and medication for his fingers.

Angry Kid and his latest injury

I was trying to be a good mom and drove to the ER on my lunch break. Well that ended up being a nightmare which involved a tow truck, and backing up traffic.  I made it to the ER, five minutes before Angry Kid was being released.  He was a trooper and loves all the doctors and nurses at the hospital.  Between his febrile seizures when he was smaller, and December’s stitches, we’ve been to the hospital over twenty times with Angry Kid.  Now if we could keep his fingers free of dirt and sand until the wounds heal.

And packing for my trip, well I have barely started!

Project 365: Week 14

An early morning t-ball game last Saturday started off our week very productive. We did some errands and made it to Michael’s, Joann’s, and even Trader Joe’s by lunchtime. It rained a few days during the week. I’m so obsessed with Slurpees, and even got some volunteering in.  I’m a little late with my Project 365 post this week, because it was quite a busy weekend.

Wordless Wednesday: Rainbow of Awesomeness

There are a few simple things that can make me smile. A fresh Sharpie is one of them.  I had a coupon last week for Michael’s for 50% off one item.  I see these large Sharpie packs every time I go there.  I just had to purchase this rainbow of awesomeness.  I haven’t used any of them yet, but I just stare at how pretty they are.  Is anyone else as obsessed with Sharpies as I am?

I love @Sharpie and this rainbow pack of awesomeness!

IKEA Lack Side Table becomes Lego Table with Tutorial

My almost six year old son loves Legos. Although most days, I think my husband loves Legos just as much.  Our house has Legos everywhere.  When my son was little, he was really into Thomas The Train.  He had a huge train table to play with his trains on.  My husband and I both wished there was something similar to a train table, but for Legos.

IKEA Lack Side Table Turned Lego Table

My husband kept coming up with the next big “brilliant” idea for a Lego table, but never followed through.  He was going to build one out of wood, but had to draw up plans, cut the wood, built it, etc.  While we were shopping at IKEA one day, I had an epiphany.  Why don’t we use one of IKEA’s inexpensive tables and build our Lego table out of that.  We chose the Lack Side Table in black.  We didn’t want to build a huge Lego table because we have a small house, and Lego Baseplates can get expensive.

Because we’ve been busy with our full-time jobs, Angry Kid, Little League, and several other projects, our Lego Table got put on hold for about a month.  I politely asked (nagged) Angry Husband if we could work on the Lego Table this past weekend.

We used the following items in our Lego Table project:

  • IKEA Lack Table
  • Lego Baseplates (1 Extra-Large Gray Lego Baseplate and 4 regular green Lego Baseplates)
  • Exacto knife
  • Level or ruler
  • Sharpie or other permanent marker
  • Spray Adhesive or Contact Cement (We used spray adhesive, not suggested, we had to fix it)
  • Painter’s tape (for temporary securing of the Lego Baseplates to the table)
  • Dremel or Laminate Cutting Tool (to trim the edges of the table)

We started with the IKEA Lack Side Table (I have no pictures of ours, but here is the stock photo from IKEA).

lack

We then centered the gray Lego Baseplate in the middle of the table. This Lego Baseplate is extra-large. You could use all green Lego Baseplates, but we made the center look like a “street” and surrounded it with green Lego Baseplates for “grass”.  After the centerpiece was measured out, we taped it down to the table with blue painter’s tape.

Lego Table Tutorial

We then took the green Lego Baseplates and placed them around the edges of the table.  We temporary secured the green Baseplates to the gray Baseplate with Legos.  Angry Husband then went underneath the edge of where the green Baseplate comes up to the edge of the table, and took a Sharpie to mark the area to be cut (excess Baseplate).   Angry Husband then used a level as a straight edge and cut the green Baseplate on the backside (non bumpy side) with an Exacto Knife.  He said that he did not cut all the way through, but scored it.  He then snapped the plate to break it into two pieces.

DSC_0027

After each cut was made, Angry Husband placed the cut pieces of green Lego Baseplate around the edges of the table.  He secured them with Legos to the gray piece.  This may not seem important, but it is VERY important to the layout of this Lego table.  You have to secure the pieces with Legos for proper spacing.  If you butt the pieces of together and just tape them, they will not line up.  Angry Husband showed me this.  It is very easy to make a mistake during this part of the process.  We had a box of loose Legos nearby that we used for placement.

DSC_0028

We left a little extra of the green Lego Baseplate hanging off the edge of the table.  Angry Husband said that we needed it, just for error and placement after the glue was laid out.  The excess Baseplate will be trimmed at the end of this project.  After all the Baseplate has been cut and laid out, the table will look like the photograph below.

Lego Table Tutorial

Angry Husband then taped butcher paper around the edges of the table to project is from the glue, and well excess glue.

Lego Table Tutorial

We then removed the Lego Baseplates from the table (gently holding them together).  We sprayed the IKEA Lack Side Table with spray adhesive.  We also CAREFULLY flipped over the Lego Baseplates and sprayed the back of them with spray adhesive.  We recommend you use contact cement. We had to fix some edges that did not firmly glue down.

Lego Table Tutorial

Lego Table Tutorial

We left the Lego Baseplates and table sit separately for thirty minutes for the glue to set up.  Angry Husband then cut up some cardboard strips to help place the Lego Baseplates onto the table.  Angry Husband laid them out and we gently flipped over the Baseplates.

Lego Table Tutorial

Lego Table Tutorial

We then carefully removed the cardboard strips after the Baseplates were centered onto the table. After each strip was removed, we pressed down on the Baseplate of that area.  Angry Husband said that we needed something heavy to place on top of the table to hold the pieces together until the glue was firmly set.  We were very tired as it was late.  He grabbed the first thing he saw, a bucket of screws.

Lego Table Tutorial

After two days, Angry Husband removed the box of screws from the table.  He also removed the blue painter’s tape that he had on the table for precautions.  He then used a laminate cutter (you can use a Dremel or similar tool) to cut the excess Lego Baseplate from around the edges of the table.

Random Trivia and Information Related to This Project:

  • The word “Baseplate” was used 28 times in this blog post.
  • I need to let my husband move Lego City Fire Departments.  I went to move my son’s Lego City Fire Department for the staging and pictures for my post, and dropped it.  It literally crumbled into hundreds of tiny pieces.  My son would have been traumatized if he had seen the condition of it.  Angry Husband had to re-build the entire Fire Department.
