Ruby’s Studio, A Review

At The BlogHer Conference in August, I had the opportunity to meet Abbie and Samantha, the mothers behind “The Mother Company”. I actually ended up a rather delicious dinner with them. We had a great discussion about our kids, our school, and everything else that involves being a mother, and a smart business woman, of course. They told us all about their company, and what the company’s core values are.

The Mother Company

The Mother Company is on a mission, to redefine screen time. They have found through studies that children ages 2-11 watch an average of 32 hours of television a week. They are redefining children’s TV by offering:

  • Programming that offers helpful solutions to everyday challenges for both kids and parents.
  • Programs that model good behavior.
  • Entertainment that is fun, stylish, and educational all at the same time.
  • Content and pacing that doesn’t make kids – or parents – freak out.

Ruby's Studio-The Feeling Show

I had the pleasure of reviewing a copy of “Ruby’s Studio-The Feelings Show”, which I was given during the BlogHer Conference. Honestly, I knew that this would be a hard sell for my son.  I knew that he was at the top of the age range for the video series, and might not want to watch the DVD.  I popped in the DVD one day and just let it play. When it came on, my son wanted nothing to do with it, as I expected. But then a few minutes later, I could hear him behind me. He was standing behind the couch, watching the show.  I think the way that the show incorporates a friendly main character, Ruby, along with real kids, and animation is the perfect combination.

It could also be the place where Ruby’s Studio, The Feelings Show was filmed. They were in a natural lit art studio. It was a wide open space with brilliant decorating and bright colors. I’m sure that my son was in awe of that, because he loves arts and crafts.

My son watched the whole DVD and interacted with it while it was on. As a six-year old, I think he had a great understanding of what the message was.  He understood that it was ok to have “feelings” and that we could talk about them.  More than a few times in my parenting career, I have asked him, “Why are you so mad? What made you angry?” I’ve learned to be more direct with my questioning as he has become a bit evasive with his answers.  Having tools like Ruby’s Studio makes parenting a whole lot easier, when you are given indicators, or topics for parenting discussions with your children.

This DVD is the first one in the Ruby’s Studio series. I think it is awesome. As I said prior, as a first grader, my son is at the top of the age range for Ruby’s Studio, but the pre-school age (3-6) is the perfect age.

Ruby’s Studio can be found at Whole Foods, The Mother Company, and Amazon. Retail price is $19.99.

Disclosure: I was given a copy of Ruby’s Studio, The Feelings Show free during The BlogHer Conference in August. All photographs/graphics in this post are courtesy of The Mother Company. All opinions in this review are mine and are not influenced in any way.

Project 365: Week 40

A week of food and fun! Well, we are just into the Fall Season. Fall means icky weather, sweaters, and soup to me. It rained here a few days this week and my son was not happy. He threw a complete fit that they could not go out and play at recess because of the rain. But luckily, the sun came out at the end of the week. I’ve been working on some Halloween decorating in my house. I just need to re-arrange some more stuff. Angry Husband’s family was in town last weekend and we got to spend some time with them. They are traveling around the US with their Chevy truck and 5th wheel. Seriously, RV’s are pretty sweet now.

Three Fall Changes

As I stated last week, I’m going to try and follow my son’s first grade journal writing prompts. Seriously, I’m borrowing writing prompts from a first grader. Can you tell that my brain is fried, and I can’t think of anything to blog about?

Here is this week’s prompt:

It is the season of Fall. Write 3 changes you see in the Fall.

I am a native Californian. We don’t really have seasons here. We mostly have sun, rain, overcast, sun.. Lately, the weather has been pretty unpredictable around here. We had blazing sun one week, and this week it is raining.

1. Dramatic Drops in temperature

At the beginning of the week, my son was wearing shorts, and a short sleeve t-shirt to school. He played outside at the park with his friends. He went to soccer practice and sweat like crazy.

As of mid-day yesterday, the rain arrived in Orange County. I had to break out the pants, long sleeve shirts, and jackets. My son requested rainboots, which I tossed several months ago. He needs new boots that are his right size.

Of course, the temperatures are supposed to rise at the end of the week. Next Monday, it is supposed to be in the mid-70’s. I wish the weather would make up it’s mind.

2. Comfort Food Consumption

During the summer, I craved fruit, smoothies, and ice cream. I may have over-indulged in Slurpees from 7-11. I have a slight addiction.

With cooler weather, I want soup, stews, and chili. I want to bake.

I blame Pinterest for all of these wonderful recipe ideas. I want to try everything. Maybe, I will even knock the dust off my crock pot.

With all of the rain, I went to Corner Bakery for lunch today. I ordered Loaded Baked Potato Soup in a bread bowl. I posted a picture of my lunch on Instagram. I think I started a movement, because at least three people went out and got soup in a bread bowl, later in the day.

Nothing better than soup on a rainy day. Loaded baked potato soup @CornerBakery.
3. Fall Fashion

Fall clothing means one thing for me, PANTS. I love summer, shorts, and fun dresses. But I do not love shaving my legs every morning in the shower. Yep, I admit it, I’m lazy.  Sometimes, it sucks being a girl.  I’m excited to find some news pants, and/or jeans for the Fall and Winter Season.

Fall trends in California are based on accessories mostly.  With Fall season here; coats, scarves, and boots will begin to show up.  I’ve got some cute coats and scarves already.  I’m a hot mess in boots. I’ve never really found boots that fit me well. It could be that I have tree stumps or turkey drumsticks for my legs. Seriously, I wish my legs looked cute in those tall leather boots, but they don’t.

While reading through some magazines at the doctor’s office recently, I saw that mustard hues are in right now.  I have never been a huge fan of “mustard” until the past year or so.  I love it now, but I’m always confused on how to match it with other colors.

I took a huge leap forward recently and got a mustard colored Lyric Camera Bag/Purse from Epiphanie. It was love at first sight. I already have a turquoise Belle Epiphanie bag, which I love. But Belle is a little big for everyday use. I found myself trying to shove my DSLR into my regular purse, which is a big no-no. I was able to fit my Nikon D700 with 50MM lens, my slave flash, my wallet, and miscellaneous other small items into my Lyric when I went to Disneyland last Friday night.

Meet my new lover, the @epiphaniebags Lyric. She is purty!
What changes do you see when it is Fall? What do you look forward to in the Fall?

Wordless Wednesday: Sleeping Beauty’s Castle During HalloweenTime

Last Friday, we attended Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland.  Angry Kid went as a ninja and trick-or-treated around Disneyland.  We did not arrive at Disneyland until right when the party started, which was 7pm.  My photography was a bit limited as it was dark outside, and flash isn’t always the best.  Luckily, they have the fabulous Halloween Screams Fireworks Show.

Mickey’s Halloween Party

On Friday night, we are able to attend the first night of Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland. We love Disneyland, and especially during HalloweenTime.  I just love all of the decorations that Disneyland puts out.  I think they have perfected that not-so-scary Halloween decorations.  Can you believe that this was our 4th year of attending Disneyland Halloween events with Angry Kid? Our first year attending Mickey’s Treat was in 2006, which was way before I started blogging here. I love the safe trick-or-treating environment that Disneyland provides.

Mickey's Halloween Party 2011

Angry Kid was excited to do some Trick-or-Treating so we headed towards Frontierland.  He was wearing his ninja costume.  Of course, it was nighttime and very dark outside.  Angry Kid is not fond of my bright flash in his eyes while taking pictures. Plus, while I was taking time to take pictures, he was missing out on some Halloween candy.  He was a little irritated with me.

Angry Kid as a Ninja

After getting a full bucket of candy, we headed towards The Haunted Mansion.  During HalloweenTime and Christmas, The Haunted Mansion turns into The Haunted Mansion Holiday, and is decorated with a Tim’s Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas theme. My favorite part of The Haunted Mansion Holiday is the gingerbread house in the Mansion Ballroom, because it smells like gingerbread in the air. Yum!

After we left The Haunted Mansion Holiday, we headed through a few more trick-or-treat stations.  Angry Husband’s friend was impressed with the healthy treats.  Angry Kid was just busy being a candy hoarder, as usual. It is pretty funny, because the kid rarely eats any of his Halloween candy. We then headed towards Frontierland.

We knew that we were going to have a HUGE EVENT for Angry Kid at Disneyland. It had been a few months since we went to Disneyland. He ran up to his usual spot and measured himself. YES, today was the day. He was FINALLY tall enough to ride Indiana Jones.  Seriously, EVERY TIME we go to Disneyland, he goes up to that pole and checks his height.  He always walks away with disappointment.  He was ecstatic.  Angry Husband made sure that he was the driver when we got on the ride.

Tall Enough for Indiana Jones at Disneyland

You know how they say that “time flies when you are having fun”? Well it does.  We realized that it was almost time for the Halloween Screams Fireworks show, so we went to find a spot to watch the show. Halloween Screams is ONLY available to watch during the select Mickey’s Halloween Party dates. They do not put on this special Halloween-themed show every night.  Seriously, it is amazing. We always look forward to the fireworks and all of the magic that occurs during the show.

While we were waiting for the fireworks to start, Angry Kid got to hang out with a friend, Gavin, the pirate, arghhhhh. Gavin the pirate is Kelly’s son.

A Pirate and a Ninja

Here is Sleeping Beauty’s Castle before Halloween Screams started. It looks so bright and cheerful.

Sleeping Beauty’s Castle looks pretty rad, doesn’t it? Seriously, I’ve taken photos of these fireworks EVERY YEAR. They always look like CRAP.  I’m not quite sure what happened here.  I’m going to write out the settings for my camera because I’m sure that people will ask. Programmed Auto Mode, don’t be hating. I swear….it was a fluke.  I edited all of them in Picnik. I didn’t do much editing, other than some cropping.

How I took the fireworks photographs:

Exposure: Programmed Auto Mode (YES, I know, AUTO)

ISO: 2000

After the fireworks ended, Angry Husband grabbed my hand and yanked me through the crowds.  He was on a mission. We headed over to Star Tours before the line got super long. I think we were like the only people in Southern California who haven’t been on Star Tours since it was remodeled and re-vamped.  I am not a huge Star Wars fan like the rest of my family, but I was pretty impressed with all of the new additions to the ride.

Star Tours at Disneyland

It was a long day, and long evening for our entire family. We had all been at work or school during the day, and it was getting late. Angry Kid had a soccer game the next morning too.  I was bummed the we did not get to go on Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, which is way cool, but Angry Kid is a little scared of it still. I love that ride. I remember being so scared to ride it as a kid.  I don’t think that I went on Space Mountain until I was an adult.

There are several other cool events also taking place during Mickey’s Halloween Party too:

  • Themed dance party with Disney Characters in Tomorrowland Terrace
  • Character Photos and Character Photo Stations Throughout the Park
  • Opportunity to play in Disneyland three hours before the event
  • Special Halloween Treats

Mickey’s Halloween Party, which is a separate ticket event, will take place in Disneyland Park on the following dates: October 3, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28, and 31.  Tickets are available at Disneyland.com/halloween. The prices range from $49-$64 depending on the date, and when it is purchased.

Disclosure: We were provided tickets for Mickey’s Halloween Party by the Disneyland resort. All opinions and photographs in this post are mine.  Please give credit to ME when using my photographs.

Project 365: Week 39

This is how life in suburbia looks. We’ve got soccer, a little blog conferencing, homework, crafts, illness, and caffeine. My son must have brought some bug home last week because I had a full blown cold come on at 12am, Monday morning. I was pretty sick until Wednesday when I started feeling better.

On Thursday morning around 2am, Angry Kid started vomiting. Nothing like that mad dash for towels and carpet cleaner in the wee hours of the morning. I think it was a 24-hour thing because he is all better now.

And as for InstaChallenge, I got a little crafty this week. I’m in the process of making a Halloween bunting to hang in my house. I’ve had the fabric for around two weeks now, but no time. A little sickness gave me some time to start working on it. Day 270, shows me cutting the fabric and also multi-tasking while watching some Law and Order SVU.

First Grade Writing Prompts

Every week my son has journal writing as part of his homework.  Last year, Angry Kid had some very simple prompts.  But this year’s first homework prompt actually gave me an idea for blog material.  I figure that I could manipulate it a little to fit my writing. We will see how it goes. I might not doing it all the time, but thought that it would be fun.

“Write 3 things that you like about being in first grade” is this week’s prompt.  I’m going to now write my version.

“Three Things That I Like About First Grade”

First Grade Homework1.  Longer School Days

Angry Kid was an early bird for Kindergarten last year.  He went to school from 8:15am-11:35am.  The mornings would fly by.  You really couldn’t get much done.

Angry Kid goes to school from 8:15am-2:15pm now, and gets an early out every Wednesday.  It is simply amazing.  We did the after-school program last year for childcare three days a week.  My mom is picking up Angry Kid two days a week after school now.  It is all going well.

2.  Not Volunteering Every Monday

I volunteered EVERY Monday in my son’s class last year.  I was there for journal writing, worksheet assistance, and anything else that I was needed for.  I loved being in my son’s class, but it really limited my free time on my days off.  I knew that his teacher counted on the parent volunteers so I never missed a day.  I wanted to sleep in soooo bad, but I never did.

I put my name down to assist with making copies or other simple things this year.  I didn’t commit to a scheduled weekly time each week.  I have a lot more freedom.  Plus, I know more people (parents) now, so I will have an open ear to what is going on in the class, with my son, etc.

3. My Son’s Confidence

Everything was an unknown last year.  Although we had a great deal of structure last year, Angry Kid stumbled through homework and academics.  Angry Kid was learning how to form his letters, write, and to read, all at the same time.  It was a lot of work for a five-year-old.  It seemed like he finally got it all around Spring Break last year.  It finally clicked for him.  During the summer, he was trying REALLY hard with his reading and spelling.  He kept trying to sound out words from signs, and even things on TV.

Angry Kid was noticeably different this year.  He walked to school without complaining. I told him last year that he has to carry his own backpack, to and from school.  He never hesitated and grabs it every morning.  He gives us input for his school lunches.  His choices have included snap peas, sliced oranges, and water.  I’m not quite sure if this kid is mine sometimes.  Although, we are struggling with the journal writing, he flew through the rest of his homework.  He totally gets math, which is good, because it completely confuses me.  He is a great reader, and I can tell that he is really try hard to sound out the words that he doesn’t understand.

I think that the biggest lesson that we learned from Kindergarten is time management.  We learned to break up the homework and not pile it all on at once. Plus, Angry Kid gets super cranky after 6pm or so.  We can’t really accomplish anything after then.  We are going to start doing a reward type of system for reading at home.  Once I figure out exactly what we are doing, I will post about it.

And really, the worst thing about first grade is the exhaustion.  Angry Kid has so much going on and I’m sure that he is soo tired at the end of the day.  I know, I’m tired.  I’m sure it will take a few months to get used to full-day school, and first grade. We had a rough first week.

What are your favorite things about school being back in session? No matter how old your kids are.
