Glitter Clothespins Tutorial

Last Christmas I decided to get a little creative with my Holiday Card display. I usually tape them to the back of our front door, but over the years, we have started to receive more and more cards. I think it is because I have so many blog friends that I exchange cards with now. I draped a white metal chain that I purchased from Lowe’s across our family room window. We have shutters on the window, so it is the perfect place to hang the cards. My husband used three small nails and hammered them into to the top of our shutters. I’m completely lazy, so they stayed there all year. It was perfect when I went to hang all of my garlands and pennants for the Holidays throughout the year. I hung my cards on the chain with simple wood clothespins.

Merry Christmas 2010
Well of course, I love craft blogs and all things crafty. I wanted to make my display a little more sparkly this year. I decided to glitter up the clothespins. Because glitter makes everything better right, well, and unicorns too. I looked at several tutorials and figured it out on my own. I’m going to share my step-by-step process here. All of the photos are taken with my iPhone. I had Mod Podge, Glitter, etc. out and did not want to get my DSLR messy.

Glitter Clothespins Tutorial
Supplies Needed:

  • Wood Clothespins
  • Glitter (I used Martha Stewart Glitter. Everyone tells me that it is the best glitter.)
  • Mod Podge (Gloss Version with the Orange Label)
  • Foam Brushes
  • Brown Craft Paper (To do the project on, not make a mess)
  • Bowl (To catch the extra glitter)

Step 1: Set Out Your Supplies

Glitter Clothespins Supplies

I chose to do this project on my kitchen counter. Glitter is the herpes of the craft world. It gets everywhere. I wanted to be able to sweep the mess into my sink after it was all done. I set down the brown craft paper and gathered my supplies.

Step 2: Open The Mod Podge Container, Organize Clothespins, Grab a Container of Glitter, and Get some Mod Podge on the Foam Brush

Supplies for Glitter Clothespins

This step should be self-explanatory. Set everything out for the first set.  I did my clothespins in groups of five. I did five of each color. I was going with a rainbow theme. Note: My husband LOATHES, actually HATES this rainbow trend. His problem, not mine. Make sure you do one color of glitter at a time, that is, doing all of the clothespins with one color, then put the extra glitter back. It is much easier to clean-up if you do it this way.

Step 3: Apply Mod Podge to the Clothespins, and Add Glitter

Applying Glitter to Clothespins

I inserted the foam brush into the container of Mod Podge. I did not get a ton of the Mod Podge on the brush, I was gentle.  I coated the long side of the clothespin with the Mod Podge. I was careful to not let it drip everywhere, because that makes a mess, and I don’t want the excess glitter to stick everywhere that it shouldn’t be.  I then grabbed a bowl and a container of glitter. I shook the glitter all over the Mod Podge coated clothespin, with the excess falling in the bowl. When I was done making the clothespins with a certain color, I made a paper funnel to dump the glitter back into its original container. I made my paper funnel because I can never find anything in this house. I know we have a small funnel somewhere.

Step 4: Leave the Clothespins Out to Dry, Glitter Side Up

Set The Clothespins out to dry

Set the clothespins out to dry. Make sure you have them glitter side up. Otherwise the Mod Podge will stick everywhere, and you will be peeling the clothespins off of the brown craft paper. I actually did it right the first time, which is completely shocking.  I let the clothespins sit on the paper for a few days, like three or four to fully dry.

Step 5: Apply Mod Podge on Top of the Glitter

Apply Mod Podge on top of glitter

I used a foam brush and Mod Podge to seal the glitter.  I lightly brushed the Mod Podge on the glittered clothespins.  I then left them to dry for three to four more days.  I coated the tops of the clothespins with the Mod Podge because otherwise, glitter would be everywhere.  Like I said before, Glitter is the herpes of the craft world.  By sealing the glitter, I can use these clothespins for a long time. After they were dry, I gathered them up and placed them into a freezer bag. I pull a different color out when I receive a new Holiday Card.

I am slowly getting Holiday Cards at my house, so I don’t have a ton right now. I think everyone is mailing theirs out late this year. Slackers! But I wanted to show an example of how the cards look when hung by the glitter clothespins. Pretty!

Other Uses and Ideas for Glittered Clothespins:

1. Paint the clothespins first. I’ve seen the clothespins painted to match the color of the glitter. They look awesome.

2. Magnets. You can glue a magnet onto the back of the clothespin to use on refrigerators to hang notes, schoolwork, etc.

3. Art displays. Hang a clotheslines, and hang up children’s artwork. They were look very snazzy hanging from the sparkly clothespins.

I Heart Faces-Furry Faces Photo Challenge

My neighbor recently got a puppy from our local humane society.  She is an adorable puppy. But I completely remember that puppy stage, which is like having a two-year old all over again. You are trying to teach them to listen to you, and to not pee and poop in the wrong place. I’m not sure which is worse, a two-year old or a puppy. At least, you can be diapers on a kid.

Angry Kid is obsessed with this dog. I’m sure that the novelty will wear off soon. You know, when he has those sharp puppy teeth wrapped around his fingers.  He will learn.

The dog’s name is “Kisses”, and after almost two months, most days, her owners call her “Pisses”, because she is not doing well with the potty training. I just laugh, and say, I told you so…. We have Chihuahua mixes, and Chihuahuas are VERY STUBBORN about potty training.

But Kisses, is ADORABLE in photos. I took this photo of my son and Kisses in October at the park.

GameStop Jingle In Your Pocket with Giveaway

GameStop
Do you have any unused iDevices in your household? I know that I do. Ever since my son got an iPad last year, he has forgotten about his iPod Touch. It is just setting in a desk drawer right now. I’m sure that I could try to sell it online at one of those auction sites, or some other online local method, but who has the time for that. I don’t want to deal with shipping, picky people, etc.

Well, I recently learned that GameStop has an awesome program that can help you earn a little cash or store credit this Holiday Season without the hassle of online auctions, or local online second-hand sales sites. It is super easy to just bring in your old iPod, iPhone and iPad to your local GameStop and put some more jingle in your pocket this holiday! No packing, shipping or hassle – a store associate will tell you the value of your trade items and give you cash or store credit on the spot.

Project 365: Week 49

I have to admit, I am a bit excited that I’m getting close to the end of Project 365.  Although, it will be fun to look back at all of the pictures that I have taken throughout the past year. But right now, well as usual, my pictures for the rest of the year will probably consist of Elf on the Shelf, Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar, Christmas decorations, and my usual food pictures.

Less Cancer, More Birthdays

We have all been touched by, affected, or related to someone whom has had cancer. My grandmother was diagnosed with cancer in the Spring of 2004.  At first the prognosis was good, and then all of the sudden, it went from good to very bad.

She passed away in September of 2004.  Ironically, less than month later, I found out that I was pregnant with our son.  We had been trying for almost two years to get pregnant.  My grandmother never got to meet that spunky kid that I refer to as Angry Kid on my blog.

In April, I was at the Mom 2.0 Summit Conference and heard about The American Cancer Society’s Birthday Campaign, More Birthdays. We heard about the amazing things that they are doing to promote More Birthdays, and we even sang “Happy Birthday”. There was not a dry eye in the room.

The More birthdays Campaign is about the following:

We believe every birthday you celebrate is a victory. Another year that cancer has not prevailed. Your birthday means everything to us. That’s why we’re dedicated to creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Thanks in part to our work, 11 million cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday this year. But we can’t stop there. With your help, we can create a world with even more celebrations, more laughter, and more birthdays for all.

My First Twilight Premiere

In late October, I received an invitation. It was from Erin, who is somewhat spazzy like me. We are a good fit. But she is quite obsessed with something that I’ve never really gotten into, Twilight. Erin was having a premiere party for the new Twilight Saga movie, Breaking Dawn. Erin goes all out for her parties. Of course, I was going to attend. But I had to do some research first. In order to attend this premiere, movie, etc. I finally had to break down and read the books, yes books, like all of them.

Project 365 305/365: Starting from the beginning...because of an upcoming wedding! Do you see this @bringingupburns?

So I might have read all four of the books in a week.  I then had to watch all of the previous movies.  All of my research was done prior to Erin’s party. I still wasn’t sure if I was into all of this Twilight hype. I did make the decision that I was Team Jacob. Because Taylor Lautner is hot. So what if he was born when I was a junior in high school, does that make me a cougar?

The week before the party, Erin was running around trying to finish her last minute projects. Actually, Erin had been working on her crafts/ideas/projects for quite some time. She likes to really carry out her theme.  I wanted to help somehow.  So I offered to make a treat for the party. My contribution was Vampire Kibble.  I had to package it right away because it was so tempting in my house.

I arrived at Erin’s house a little early that night to take some pictures of her decor. I wanted to get pictures before everyone had attacked the food and snacks.

Of course, not only did she have food and drinks but she also had trivia games. She had a “Name That Vampire” game with photographs of various vampires from different movies, and also a “Twilight Trivia Powerpoint” via her outdoor movie screen also known as “The Tree Screen” since they have it hanging from a tree in their front yard.

Erin and I also have a bit of a tradition anytime we have cupcake pictures. We call this this Twilight cupcake pose. The cupcakes were port wine and chocolate cherry flavored. Deliciousness!

And then there was swag, YES, she even made Swag bags.…it was like a celebrity movie premiere, without having to buy a really expensive dress.

From Erin’s blog:

The bags were black canvas that I labeled with “Keep Calm and Break Dawn” on the outside. Inside, guests found a 35mm film strip bookmark (I just cut the film into 10 frame pieces and laminated,) gummy fangs, a fang ring, a bag of candy blood (type V for Vegetarian prescribed by Dr. Carlisle Cullen, of course) feathers, a CD I made with songs from all 4 movie soundtracks (printed the CD sleeves on red card stock and then sewed up the sides with black thread. LOVED how they turned out!) Apple mittens, and a handwritten card thanking everyone for indulging me in my crazy!

Breaking Dawn Premiere Party Swag Bag

Before we left to go to the movie theater, I got a group picture of everyone wearing their mittens that Erin had placed in her swag bag. And believe me, we wore them while waiting outside the movie theater, it was cold.

Twilight Apple Gloves

After another very large Dr. Pepper, I arrived at the theater. I had been up since 5am that morning. It was an extremely long day but so worth it. I had seen all of the Twilight movies, but I had never gone to the midnight premiere.

Breaking Dawn at Big Newport
I was very happy that I had read all of the books, before I saw the movie. It would have been very confusing to me. This movie and even the book had a ton of major events happen. It is hard to keep track of everything. The computer graphics aka CGI were insane. I think they have gotten so much better since the first movie. Snaps to them for the awesome quality.

I won’t go into all of the details of the movie, but I got to see Jacob aka Taylor Lautner without his shirt a few times, which is always a good thing. I’m not sure if I’m a diehard TwiHard but I did enjoy the books and movie. I’m not obsessed with them like some people, cough cough Erin….but they were all good.

I also got to meet Denise while I was at the party too. She had flown out for Erin’s party and of course, the movie premiere. She is a big fan.

You are probably wondering what Erin’s NEXT big huge MOVIE PREMIERE party is, right? Well I think I’m going to coordinate with Erin for The Hunger Games!!! We are both super excited. I already have a Pinterest board started with ideas. We are both a little obsessed. I had to get a photo of the movie advertisement. Coincidently, this photo was taken before Breaking Dawn started. Amazing, that I didn’t look dead tired.

A bit excited about The Hunger Games.
Please see Erin’s post “Keep Calm and Break Dawn” which is her recap post. She goes into more detail about the decor, food, beverages, games, etc. for her party. I was just the photographer, and of course, guest.

Wordless Wednesday: Zurg The Elf

Anyone else doing The “Elf on a Shelf”?

Mr. Zurg or just plain, “Zurg” as we named his last year, made his appearance starting on December 1st. It was a cute idea at first. You do funny things with the elf. You move him around, etc. I should have learned my lesson last year, right? I went and bookmarked all these cute ideas. Every night, around 11pm, I start to panic. I think to myself, “where do I put this dumb elf tonight?” On Monday night, he jumped onto the bunting hanging from our office doorway.  You know the bunting that I made. Ya, that’s a whole other story, but I am taking sewing lessons. Because I need more things to do in my busy life.

Are you ready to kick the elf to the curb? Or is it just me?

A Little Sparkle With A Giveaway

Every once in a while, I take some photographs…ok, totally kidding..I take pictures almost every day, whether it be with my DSLR or my iPhone.

I have the pleasure of alternating between two different Nikon cameras. One for work (Nikon D90), and one for pleasure (Nikon D700).  I have a camera strap from My Funky Camera on both of the cameras that I use. I have been using my work one for almost two years now, and it still looks PERFECT.  There is no fraying and it cleans up nicely. When it gets extra dirty, I use baby wipes to clean it up. You may have seen my famous Crime Scene Camera Strap in some of my photos or even in person.

My Funky Camera has two new super cute designs that they came out with, just in time for the Holidays. They have a Pink Sparkle and a Silver Sparkle camera strap. They retail for $32, which is an excellent price for such a beautifully designed camera strap.
