The Color Run 5K Race Recap

A few months ago, Megan (who I met through blogging, but Megan rarely blogs) posted a link to The Color Run on my Facebook wall.  I was pretty sure that she was giving me a strong suggestion that she wanted me to sign up.  Megan lives in the Santa Barbara area, which meant that she would have to make the trek down here to Orange County to do the race with me.  I signed up for the race that day, and pretty much forgot about it until a week or so before the race.

I realized that I had overbooked my weekend of The Color Run, and that I would be doing the race with only a little bit of sleep.  I was busy the Friday and Saturday before the race with The Ragnar Relay SoCal.  I was helping my friends, Team Sparkle, by doing photography and social media for them.  So on my way home from Ragnar, I had to stop by Target to get myself a white tank top for The Color Run.  Luckily, we have a Target near us that is open till 11pm.

Megan got to my house at 7am, and we got organized and left for the race.  I grabbed some towels, baby wipes, and a trash bag.  I’ve done two mud runs and I remember how dirty I was after the runs.  I brought the towels to sit on in my car, the baby wipes to clean off with, and the trash bag to throw some of our paint covered clothes in.

After parking our car, and wandering a bit, we headed to the starting line. It was very “white”, as we were advised to wear white shirts.

Megan and I took a self-portrait pre-race.

And I had to take a portrait of our Team Sparkle Skirts with our knee highs from Target.

After taking these pictures, I placed my iPhone inside a plastic bag.  I did not want it to get damaged with the “color” during the race.  Right before taking off, we ran into Danica and Shea.  We all pushed up to the front of the group, so we were able to be in the first wave of people. That was a huge deal, because we didn’t have to wait forever to start the race.  We had some laughs before the race as we deemed it “The Hipster Race”.  I said, all we need is fedoras and fake mustaches.  Danica then pointed to a group of people wearing fedoras.

Danica was really good at taking pictures as we ran through each other station.  I took some pictures but they were super blurry.  We had another runner take this group picture of Megan, me, Danica, and Shea after we had gone through three color stations (yellow, green, and purple).  After the first station, yellow, we learned how to get proper coverage of colorEach station we alternated, left-right-left-right.  Then we going through the station, we would do a 360-turn to get color everywhere.  Otherwise you would only get color on one side. And everyone else in our group was smart to wear sunglasses.  I was a total fail and forgot mine at home.

Since, we were in the first wave of runners, there wasn’t a ton of people done yet.  I took a photo of the finish line and everyone post-race.  This was born the “Color Drop” when you got pretty much submerged in color.

Untitled
And I took this photo after the “Color Drop”. When you pick-up your race packet, you get a packet of color to bring to the race with you. Megan and I both got green packets. I placed it inside my SPIbelt during the race.  They were doing announcements every fifteen minutes or so with count down.  When they said it was time, everyone opened their packets and let the color go in the air.  You are probably wondering what the color actually is?  The color is food grade cornstarch per The Color Run’s website.

I also took a video of a Color Drop with my iPhone (it is a bit pixelated):

And some after photos of Megan and I.

It was like they knew I would be here. A huge Slurpee truck @thecolorrun today! #thecolorrun
After the race and color drop, I may have spotted a very large Slurpee truck. I heart Slurpees so I made Megan wait in line. The Slurpees were tiny, but also tasty.

Megan and I post @thecolorrun!!! We are vivid!! #thecolorrun #teamsparkle cc: @wmgg

And you are probably wondering if we got clean? Megan and I both got “blown off” by this guy. It really got rid of a ton of powder that was just sitting on us. After we got back to the car, we bathed in baby wipes. The wipes took a ton of the color off from our faces, legs, and arms. When I got home, I stripped down in my garage. I had color everywhere, even on my feet, which had been covered with socks and shoes. I used soap and baby oil to get most of the color off. I had stains for a few days in the crooks of my arms, and my armpits.

Overall it was a very fun race.  I went in expected nothing, as it was not a timed race.  It was fun seeing everyone dressed up in costumes, tutus, and of course our Team Sparkle Skirts.  I also loved doing it with Megan, Danica, and Shea.  It was FABULOUS for picture taking also!!!  If you get the chance and there is a color run in your area, sign-up! You don’t have to be a runner to do it. I saw several people walking it. Plus, the races are selling out fast, so don’t hesistate!

Wordless Wednesday: Splash

I had a busy weekend and my parents took Angry Kid overnight on Saturday.  My parents ended up meeting friends at Legoland on Sunday, and then ended the day at their friend’s house.  Angry Kid was diving into their pool at 6pm Sunday night. He was having a blast. You would have thought it was summer.

Wordless Wednesday: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles

Last Friday, our entire family was sitting around staring at each other.  It was Spring Break, and it was raining.  We were all bored out of our minds.  I made a quick decision and told everyone to get their shoes on, because we were going on a field trip.  We drove through some heavy rain, but we made it to The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.  Angry Husband gave me one of those, “This better be good. We drove here in pouring rain, all the way to LA” looks.  He was pleasantly surprised at how awesome The Natural History Museum was.  He even told several of his friends about it.

Disneynature’s Chimpanzee Premiere

Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a premiere of Disneynature’s newest movie, Chimpanzee.  I invited my BFF, Stacey, and her daughter, Stella to go along.  Of course, I brought Angry Kid also.  The movie was being shown at the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.  This was the first time that I have been to El Capitan.  We have so many cool places to visit in California, and there are tons that I haven’t been too.

Stacey and I kept the movie premiere from Stella as a secret.  She has been counting down until April 20th, when the movie opens everywhere.  On the way there, we let Angry Kid tell Stella where we were going.  I don’t think that Stella believed us when we told her at first.

Disneynature Chimpanzee PremiereThe kids got to be celebrities for the day.  Look at how cute they are in front of the movie posters.  After taking these pictures, we grabbed our snacks and headed for our seats.  When we got there, Stacey was really smart and asked one of the ushers where the best seats were.  The usher told us that the best view was from the balcony area, so up the stairs we went.  The view of the movie screen was awesome!

What is the movie “Chimpanzee” about?

From Disneynature:

Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with “Chimpanzee,” a new True Life Adventure introducing an adorable young chimpanzee named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Directed by Alastair Fothergill (“African Cats” and “Earth”) and Mark Linfield (“Earth”), and narrated by Tim Allen (“Toy Story 3,” ABC’s “Last Man Standing”), “Chimpanzee” is the fourth release for Disneynature—the first three releases under the label (“Earth,” “Oceans” and “African Cats”) are among the top four highest grossing feature-length nature films of all time.

“Chimpanzee” showcases Oscar’s playful curiosity, his zest for discovery and the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy—navigates the complex territory of the forest.

The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimpanzees, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival band of chimpanzees, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever.

The movie was amazing. Both of the kids loved it. Angry Kid was telling everyone about it at school on Monday. He told me that his favorite part was when “Oscar was learning to break about the nutshells, and he used a wood branch and it broke.” Angry Kid thought that particular scene was sooo hilarious. If you see the movie, you will totally know what he meant.  Apparently one of the little girls at school did not believe Stella when she said that she saw the movie already.  Stacey took her iPhone and showed the little girl today.

I loved the cinematography.  The colors were so bright and vivid.  I felt like I was right there in the middle of the jungle. The narration by Tim Allen was spot on. His seriousness along with humor made it understandable for the kids, and relatable for the adults also.

I was researching the making of the movie, and found some “fun facts” that as an adult, I was amazed.

  • More than 700 days of filming was done for the movie
  • Getting to the Tai Forest took more than two days for the crew
  • The film team had 550 pounds of food, which had to last for 3 months in the forest
  • On a typical day, each crew member carried over 40 pounds of weight around, including cameras, lenses, and bottled water
  • The crew had stay 23 feet away from the Chimpanzees

After viewing the movie, we went downstairs and immediately ran into some of the cast members from The Disney Channel Shows.  Angry Kid watches a ton of these shows, and I was amazed at how many of the actors that he knew about.  He actually knew that real names, and their character names.  They weren’t allowing large cameras, so I used my iPhone to take a picture of the kids with Cameron Boyce who plays “Luke” on Jessie.  The picture is a bit grainy because it was so dark in there.  Seriously, it was kinda cute to see the kids so starstruck.  The celebrity kids were super nice and polite too.

Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior started more than 50 years ago—research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian program for youth of all ages, which has groups in more than 120 countries. Chimpanzee swings into theaters on April 20th, 2012, just in time for Earth Day!

Disclosure: I received free tickets for the viewing of the movie, Chimpanzee.  I received a press release and downloadable files from Disneynature in reference to the movie, “Chimpanzee”.  All thoughts and opinions are mine.  Even the cheesy grainy pictures are mine.  I had my DSLR with me, but I did not want to get mistaken for the evil paparazzi.

The 2012 Ultimate Blog Party

I am participating in the 2012 Ultimate Blog Party with 5 Minutes For Mom.  The Ultimate Blog Party is a celebration that Susan and Janice from 5 Minutes For Mom has had for the past six years.  This is my 3rd year participating!

Ultimate Blog Party 2012
Let me introduce myself to you, if you are a new reader.  And if you are not a new reader, well maybe you will learn something new about me, or maybe not!

My name is Julie, and sometimes people call me Angry Julie.  Angry Julie is a nickname given to me long ago.  I married to a wonderful husband, whom I call Angry Husband in my blog.  I’ve known Angry Husband for almost eighteen years, and our fourteenth wedding anniversary is this year.  In 2005, Angry Kid came along after a pregnancy where I endured hyperemesis, and gallstones.  I work full-time outside of the home.  Angry Kid is almost seven years old, and is in the first grade.  We live in Orange County, California.  And I am nothing like the Real Housewives, although I have seen a few of them at the local mall.

My blog/website is very photo heavy.  Most of my blogging and posts are done around my photographs.  I use a Nikon D700 for my DSLR photos, and my iPhone4 for everything else.  I consider myself a lifestyle blogger, and pretty much talk about anything and everything.  I post a lot of photographs of our daily routines, but every once in awhile I post a tutorial, recipe, or even a craft.  I’ve recently gotten back into running, so some of my upcoming posts might be fitness related, but with my usual humor of course.

In October of 2011, I had my dream photo shoot with my family. We had DrewB take our family photos. Drew was able to capture all of our personalities. You can pretty much sum our family in this photo above.  I live in the house of boys and guns.

Like I said above, I love my iPhone, and I love taking photographs. Here are some of my favorites taken with my iPhone:

Project 365 174/365: I had to take a picture of The La Grande Wheel @ocfair before they open next month. I wanted a photo without passengers.

And yes, from time to time, I actually write some decent blog posts.  Here are some of the more popular ones from the past year:

Instagram, What Not To Do

Instagram is my most favorite app on my iPhone.  I posted my first picture on Instagram on December 28, 2010. How do I even know that? A little awesome website called Statigram told me so.  Statigram also told me that there are 4257 comments and 17,779 likes on the photos that I’ve posted on Instagram.  Pretty cool, right?

What is Instagram?  Instagram is a photo sharing site. Instagram is a fun and free way to share your life through photos via your mobile phone device whether it be an iPhone or Android.

Instagram just released for the Android, and had 5 Million downloads in 6 days.  Which means, there are a ton of new users.  Also, I’m sure that you might have heard, that Facebook recently purchased Instagram for one billion dollars.  That is a lot of zeros.

Although Instagram sold-out to the Facebook overlords, I’m not quite ready to ditch the app just yet, but I am starting to get annoyed with some of the Instagram users on there lately.  I’m not the only one who has developed some pet peeves when it comes to Instagram.  I polled a couple of my friends, who are active users on Instagram to see what “bugs them” about Instagram.

My Top 10 Things Not To Do on Instagram

What Not To Do On Instagram

1.  Instagram Is Not Facebook or Twitter

Please save your thoughts, reflections and updates for those sites.  Instagram = Pictures. Got it?

To clarify this: I’m not talking about the text going along with the photo that you post. I’m talking about posting this silly Tweegrams and other notepad things like this.

2.  Instagram is not Etsy or E-Bay

We love that you make homemade lovelies, but please pawn off your wares elsewhere.  I enjoy seeing your creating your crafts, etc. But  I don’t want to see prices and buyers listed in your comments. Awkward much?

3.  Post Gross Photos

My friend is a runner, and she follows other runners on Instagram.  She loves to see all of the happy runners after races with their shiny metals. But, she loathes seeing photos that some runners post of their black or missing toenails.  I mean really, I don’t think that I would even show my husband that gross-ness in person.

4.  Re-post Someone Else’s Photo from Online and/or Pinterest Type Sites

I’m noticed more and more photos that are in the “popular” section on Instagram, are actually popular on Pinterest also.  They may be a nail paint job, or a certain hair-do.  They are not your original photos, i.e. thieving teenager who gets 3000 likes on someone else’s  photo that they right-clicked or screen shot from the Internetz.

5.  Beg People To follow You

If your photos are good, people will follow you. I promise.  Don’t leave comments on “popular” posters photos that say, “follow me” or “i love your photos soooo very much, come and check mine out”.  That is slightly annoying and a little creepy.

6.  Screenshot Your Blog Or Website

If there is a special occasion, new design, etc. go for it. But seriously, you don’t need to screenshot every blog post to say, “hey look, i have a blog, please come look”.  Instagram isn’t about promoting your blog, even if it is awesome.  Instagram is about photo sharing.

7.  Over-sharing Self Portraits

Yes, I think you are pretty, or maybe even beautiful. But really, self-portraits posted every day is a bit narcissistic.  I get uncomfortable when I see these posted over and over again by the same people.

8.  Using Too Many Filters On Your Photos

There are some really rad post-editing apps for photography on cellphones now.  Believe me, I know.  I have at least two pages of photography apps on my iPhone.  But really, there is only so much you can do when editing photos taken with your phone.  Be careful not to use too many filters on your photos.  And cross process, I love you, but cross process is turning into the new comic sans of photo edits.

9.  Over Posting On Instagram

As a blogger, I get invited to events occasionally.  Usually the brand or person hosting the event has some kind of hashtag that they would like you to use during the event and after for tracking purposes.  It makes the brand happy to see their hashtag #radbrandisawesome.  But I have noticed lately, that there are some bloggers who are over-promoting their events via Instagram.  We get it, you are at an event.  But posting a photo EVERY five minutes is not memorable for your followers.  Go through the photos that you took via your phone, and pick out the best ones.  Share those photos throughout the next few days with the hashtag.  It will have more ROI (return on investment) for that brand. And you won’t get unfollowed.

10.  Not Paying It Forward

Instagram is a photo sharing site.  The purpose is share and interact with each other’s photos.  I love when people comment on my photos.  And I love to give “likes” and comments on other people’s photos. There is nothing better than to take an awesome photo, crop it, add a filter, and then re-size it to perfectly fit in that little IG square….and then get instantaneous comments and likes.  Everyone loves praise! Do someone a favor, share the love!

Yes, every once in awhile, I violate my own pet peeves.

But there is a time and place for everything!

What are your Instagram pet peeves?

Wordless Wednesday: Spring Break

Angry Kid is on Spring Break. We are at home.  No fancy resorts for us, unless some kind of rich Uncle came along? Any volunteers?

Angry Kid has been going to soccer camp, while I have been doing some reading and running…ironically, my reading is about running.

A little #running reading came in the mail today. Another Mother Runner cc: @sbsontherun @dimityontherun #motherrunners

Books highly recommended by friends.  I actually met the authors and sorta ran with them at BlogHer in August.

Did 3.5 miles around my neighborhood today. I'm working the speed up. My #seenonmyrun view today. So many trees, so many allergies.

My view while running today.

At the end of Day 2 of AYSO Spring Break camp. He is still smiling. And hungry....all this running has him eating like a teenager.

After soccer camp today.

Random things in my garage. It's 6 ft wide by 4 ft. tall. Although good for stress relief. Angry Kid's soccer rebounder. #soccer
