Wordless Wednesday: This Election Has Gone To The Dogs

Last Saturday night, my family and I (of course) attended the 24th Annual Orange County Police Canine Association (OCPCA) Demonstration and Benefit Show in Anaheim. It was a pretty awesome show. We were all entertained. They did some great skits with zombies, aliens, and even presidential debates.

I captured this great photograph from afar of the Presidential Debate between Mutt Romney and Bark Obama who were escorted by their Secret Service Agents {aka Canine Handlers}.

Lulu.com Holiday Photo Contest

We have family living in several different states. With today’s technology we (my family) is able to share our daily life, trips, and memorable moments online with digital photography.  But there are some members of our family who do not use Facebook nor read my blog.  My mom loves when I get photographs printed out and/or framed for her.

Now that the Holidays are coming up fast, I’m starting to look for great memorable Christmas gifts. Using all of these photographs that I’ve taken all year would be a fantastic gift for my family. You know, rather than the photos sitting in a folder on my computer {seriously, you know that you do the same thing}.

I recently heard about a great company, Lulu.com through my friends from 5 Minutes for Mom.  Lulu.com helps you self publish photobooks through their website.

About Lulu:

At Lulu, it’s free to publish, and authors can create everything from hardcover books to eBooks, photo books to calendars. Authors keep all the rights to their works and retain 80 percent of the profit they set when their books sell. We operate a global print network and provide worldwide distribution so that authors can reach readers just about anywhere, including on Amazon.com and the iBookstoreSM. If authors need any help along the way — with cover design, editing, formatting, marketing or the publishing process in general — our services team can provide expert assistance through a la carte offerings and bundled packages.

Janice and Susan from 5 Minutes for Mom wanted me to tell you about the awesome Holiday Photo Contest that Lulu.com is hosting!  The photo contest is being held on Lulu.com’s Facebook Page through October 26, 2012.

Prizes for the contest include: a Canon Rebel t3i DSLR Camera plus $500 to use at Lulu.com to make a photo book or calendar, two Google Nexus 7 tablets and $200 to use at Lulu to make a photo book and/or calendar, and a $100 gift card to Target plus $100 to use at Lulu on photo books and calendars.

The Strength of 1 with Freschetta

You can’t go wrong with pizza for dinner in our house. It is fast, easy, and something that we can all agree on.  We rarely agree on the same thing for dinner in our house, unfortunately.  After Blissdom 2011, my family fell in love with the awesomeness of Freschetta pizza.  We love making it at home on our oven. And if you use a baking stone to cook it, the crust is FABULOUS!  We eat Freschetta several times a month, and it is so much cheaper than delivery pizza!

Project 365 34/365: Angry Kid likes the #Freschetta pizza that I got free via @Blissdom. So good cooked on baking stone.

Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Freschetta is sharing a great digital coupon deal with my readers.  This deal is a digital coupon download through Vons’ Just for You program where if you purchase TWO (2) Freschetta® Multi-Serve Pizzas or Freschetta® Artisan Pizza Crusts you will receive $5 off your floral purchase. This deal expires 10/31/12.

School Lunch

This is the third year that my son is bringing his lunch to school.  In Kindergarten, he only attended half day but he attended the after school program where he ate his lunch that we packed.  In first grade, he was anxious and excited to eat his school lunch at the lunch tables with all of the other kids.  But we started noticing a trend in his lunch eating….a ton of food was coming home with him.

School Lunch
We finally realized that he was in a hurry to go out and play, so he rarely finished his lunch. He came home hungry and cranky. It was not good. We then sat down with him and discussed his lunch options. We asked what he wanted in his lunches, and we also told him that he needs to eat.

This school year, second grade, brought some big changes to my son’s lunch.  He has been asking to buy “hot lunch” for quite some time.  He has always brought his lunch.  We told him that he could buy lunch on Fridays at school. He was and is still excited by that fact.  I’m pretty excited about not having to make his lunch on Fridays, which is my day off.

On the first day of school, we got an email from the principal of my son’s school.  She wanted everyone to know that they were making some changes for “lunchtime” at my son’s school.  They were now going to use the “Play Before Eating”  schedule for lunches.  My son is super happy with this new schedule because he gets to work on his “handball” skills while not hurrying to eat prior.  My son, as with most second graders, is pretty obsessed with handball right now.

Before my son bought his first “hot lunch”, I downloaded the school district’s lunch menu for elementary schools.  I immediately noticed verbage and bolded titles on their website announcing “healthy changes for the 2012-2013 school year.”  The school district was meeting the federal standards for school meals, and was ensuring that meals were healthy and well-balanced with age-appropriate calorie limits, larger servings of fruit and vegetables, fat free or 1% milk, more whole grains, and less sodium.  From the school district’s website: “a lunch meal is comprised of five components based on MyPlate.  A meal must have 3-5 components.  Students must take a 1/2 cup fruit or a vegetable with a meal.”  They also offer condiments, such as: ranch dressing, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, syrup, soy sauce, marinara sauce, and taco sauce.

What does this all mean? My son is FINALLY drinking milk again! He hasn’t been a milk drinker since preschool, and the changes at school have prompted him to drink milk again. He is asking for more fruits and vegetables in our house. He has also turned into the “Healthy Food Police”.  He recently told me that I need to stop drinking Dr. Pepper, and he also told my mom, his grandmother, to stop drinking Diet Coke. He told his Nana, that “Diet Coke is not healthy and that she should drink water”.  I love my son’s new “Health Kick” especially since he rides his bike with me now when I run, without any hesistation. He actually asks me when I’m going to go and run now. And I also think that he is going through a growth spurt, because he is literally eating 24/7.  We can’t keep enough food in our house.  I can only imagine how it will be when he is a teenager.

I’m constantly looking online for new ideas for my son’s school lunches.  He is stuck in a “turkey sandwich rut” right now.  I love Pinterest for ideas, and have saved quite a great posts.  One of my favorite posts about “school lunches” is from Kristen Howerton from Rage Against The Minivan.  In her post, Teaching Kids To Pack Their Own Lunches, she added a great printable “How To Pack Your Lunch” which has great lunch making guidelines for me and my son.

Between the dates of October 15th-19th, 2012, Hidden Valley Original Ranch dressings & dips are hosting the Lunch Break for Kids National Fundraiser.  Lunch Break for Kids goal is to showcase how simple, good food can make healthier bodies and stronger family connections, as well as support CCF’s national Childhood Nutrition Day in its mission to promote healthier eating to kids and their families through community-based initiatives.  Find a Lunch Break for Kids fundraiser or a Childhood Nutrition Day volunteer location in your area to join, or start one of your own.  Here is the list of locations (select “location” on the navigation toolbar at the top).

Hexbug Warriors Battle Stadium

My son has been a huge fan of Hexbug ever since they were released. When I attended The BlogHer ’12 Conference in New York this summer, I saw a preview of the next big thing from Hexbug, Hexbug Warriors.  Hexbug Warriors are battling robots.

I recently received a Hexbug Warriors Battle Stadium for review.  The Battle Stadium is the ultimate large scale battleground for the Hexbug Warriors.  The stadium comes with two Hexbug Warriors {Battling Robots}, (8) expandable Battle Stadium pieces (compatible with Battle Arena), and 12 standoffs.

Hexbug Warriors
From the website:

In the year 2087, students from the world’s greatest science academies apply their technical skills to compete using battling robots known as WARRIORS.  Now you must choose sides and configure your robot with weapons and armor to emerge victorious and gain prestige for your chosen academy.

Hexbug Warriors

My son took all of the parts out of the box and set up the Battle Stadium by himself.  I was quite impressed with him. He was eager to watch the robots battle.

The unique thing about the Hexbug Warriors is that they have two modes: training mode and match mode. You can choose Training Mode, with unlimited health, for scrimmages and testing purposes. Power Warriors into Match Mode for competition. Once put in Match Mode, each robot’s Shock Sensor activates its Damage Indicator Light which changes colors from green to yellow to red and blinks more rapidly as its health decreases. Warriors can then be reset after each battle.

Hexbug Warriors
My son loves watching the Hexbug Warriors battle. He keeps switching around their battle armor also. He cannot wait to collect more of the Hexbug Warriors.  He becomes somewhat of a hoarder with Hexbug products.

I highly recommend the Hexbug Warriors and Battle Stadium.  This is a toy that my son will play with over and over again.  He has even told his friends about the Warriors.

The Hexbug Warriors Battle Stadium retails for $29.99.  It is recommended for ages 6+.

Hasbro zAPPed Games

My 7-year old son has been an avid iPad user since he received his as a Christmas gift almost two years ago.  We don’t spend a ton of money and games and apps for the iPad because he usually plays free games.

Although he loves play games on his iPad, he also likes playing traditional board games too.  I was excited to hear about Hasbro’s zAPPed games, which are iPad games with interactive games pieces that you move around on the screen of the iPad.  The games are free online through the App store and the game pieces are purchased for $17.99 and up, depending ont the game.

Just received these fun @HasbroGameNight Spellshot and Battleship zAPPed Edition Games for our iPads. Can't wait to try them out!
I was sent to zAPPed edtion games which were Battleship zAPPed Movie Edition and Spellshot zAPPed Edition.

With the Battleship zAPPed Movie Edition, players use their iPad screen as the playing surface when waging battles. Using proprietary technology, the iPad will recognize which ship pawns are in play and when they are moved.

All of the elements-Earth, Air, Fire, and Water are combined in the mesmerizing and magical game of Spellshot zAPPed Edition.  Once again, using proprietary technology, the iPad recognizes which of the four wizard pawn figures are placed on the screen as players use strategy and skill to “cast spells” with touch-screen gestures.

My son loved playing both of these games on his iPad. It gave him something new and different to play rather than the games that he usually plays which have him “growing something” or “trying to earn more coins”.  I’m really getting tired of the in-app purchases also. Luckily I have restrictions set on all of those but the gamemakers really get tricky with those.  I think my son’s favorite game was the Battleship zAPPed Edition because we own the board game and he also saw the movie recently.  He loved moving all of the ships around on the screen of his iPad. And the best part, he could play the game by himself rather than the board game where it takes two players.

Both games are an approximate retail price of $17.99. They are recommended for ages 8 and up.

Disclosure: I was provided copies of Battleshop zAPPed Movie Edition and Spellshot zAPPed Edition for review purposes. I was not given any cash. All opinions and photographs are my own.

Micro Chargers

Micro Chargers are micro-sized cars which you load into a handheld charger to charge them up.  You then place them on the track to race each other. There are over 30 Micro sized cars to choose from including super fast race cars and loop-the-loop ready stunt cars. You select your Micro car, place the car in the quick charge handheld charger, and then let the car race!  The Micro cars can excel to speeds over 600 mph.

With over 30 Micro sized cars to choose from, there are also three different track packages: loop track, jump track, and time track.  We had the opportunity to test out the loop track.  The car goes up into the loop, around, circles back around, and does the loop again. It is a single car loop, but super fast!

Micro Chargers Review via Angry Julie Monday

A close-up view of the Quick Charge Handheld Charger, The End of The Loop Track, and a Micro Car.

Micro Chargers Handheld Charger, Loop Track, and Micro Car

My son has had a blast playing with this track. He is already asking for more tracks.  We had a party the night that I received the package with the Micro Chargers kit, and the kids played with this toy all night. These kids were ages 4, 7, and 9. They all fun playing with them. So much fun that one of the dads called my husband the other night asking what the name of the toy was.

Micro Chargers requite two AAA batteries (not included), recommended for ages 5 years and up, and have a $19.99 MSRP. They are available at Toys R’ Us and other select toy retailers nationwide.  I think $19.99 MSRP is the perfect price for a birthday party gift. I usually spend about $20, and this set fits right in under my budget.

Micro Chargers has a great video showing how the product works. See below!

Caution: These Micro cars are VERY tiny. I would be careful if there was small children, infants, babies, and even small animals (hungry dogs) around them.  One of the cars almost got lost in the jungle of my son’s bedroom carpeting.

Disclosure: I was provided a Micro Chargers Loop Track Set for review. All opinions and photographs are mine. The video is via Micro Chargers.
