Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Meet-Up aka #winedinehalfmeetup

So I flew out, to this little ole place called Walt Disney World. Have you ever heard of it? I thought so…

I went with my friend, Kelly to run a half marathon. Yep, half marathon #2 within a month of my very first half marathon. I’m crazy like that. We went to WDW to run the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon. This was a special treat for me because 1. I’ve never been to Walt Disney World 2. I was going with a great friend 3. It was my second half marathon 4. It was a night run {awesome} and 5. It was my birthday the week after the race.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Meet-Up the day before the actual race with some special guests. We got up super early that morning and left for the meet-up at 6am. Which in case you are wondering, with the 3-hour time difference, it was 3am my time. Yikes, it was early!

@according2kelly and @angryjulie in @runTeamSparkle Skirts for the @runDisney Wine and Dine Half Meet-Up at Epcot

Of course, we had to dress “the part” for the meet-up. Kelly as Snow White, and me as Minnie Mouse. We were both wearing skirts from Team Sparkle, of course.

Kelly and I got to meet-up with some other awesome runDisney runners like Rachel, Krissy, and Heather. I was super excited to meet Krissy because we had been talking {tweeting} online to each other for some time. Rachel was a big help during our meet-up run because she is a Disney World expert and told me all about Epcot while we ran throughout the park. I had met Heather the day before, so it was great to see a familiar face in the crowd.

Speaking of familiar faces….Mickey Mouse stopped by in his running gear. He came to hang out with the “runners” at the meet-up.

After everyone was gathered together, we were organized into two groups for our meet-up run 1. the super fast speedy types like Kelly, and 2. people who don’t run 7 minutes miles and did the run/walk/run method with special guest Jeff Galloway. You can probably guess which group I ran with? I had a great run/walk throughout Epcot with Rachel. She told me about Epcot and The Wine and Dine Festival going on throughout Epcot. Jeff Galloway led our group through Epcot with a run/walk ratio of 30:30, which means 30 seconds of running and 30 seconds of walking.

Mid-way through our run, we {group #2 with Jeff Galloway} stopped to take a group picture, and Mickey Mouse joined in for the fun!

After our run we ended up in Germany {at Epcot} to hear some great speakers. Bob Hitchcock {Mr. runDisney} gave us all a warm welcome and introduced the fabulous guests that were speaking at the event.

runDisney Wine and Dine Half Meet-Up. Photo by runDisney.

Then Faron Kelly {Director of Sports Marketing & Communications for WDW} spoke about “runDisney” actually only being around for two years and how it has evolved. He also spoke about working with Jeff Galloway {runDisney Training Consultant} and Tara Gidus {Official Nutritionist for runDisney}.

runDisney Wine and Dine Half Meet-Up. Photo by runDisney.

We then heard our next speaker, Jeff Galloway. Jeff spoke about nutrition before a race and especially before a “night” race which we were running the next day. He advised not to eat anything too heavy.  He also talked about his run/walk/run method and reducing injuries.

After hearing Jeff’s great training advice, we were introduced to Anton Van Zyl {2-time Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Winner}. Anton had just participated in the Ironman Kona prior to the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon which is amazing for an athlete. He spoke about eating potato chips as his favorite fuel during a race. He said he wasn’t going to win this race {2012 Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon} as he was going to “run it”. Ironically, the next night, he WON the 2012 Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon, and took 17 pictures along the way.

runDisney Wine and Dine Half Meet-Up. Photo by runDisney.

Speaking of food, and nutrition of course, Tara Gidus {Official Nutritionist for runDisney} spoke about proper nutrition for runners and not starving ourselves.  She spoke about those runners that complain about gaining weight while marathon training. She mentioned the fact that you are not giving your body enough nutrition and fuel and it is starving itself, hence the weight gain. She also spoke about eating something before an early morning run, and also eating after your run. She has some great nutrition tips on the runDisney website.

Chef Steff, The Sports Chef.

After all of this talk about running, food, and nutrition, I was starting to get hungry. We had some muffins and orange juice, but I was seriously craving some protein. Our next special guest was Chef Steff. Chef Steff talked about what and how we should be eating as athletes. I admit, I am a bit of a novice in this topic. I eat horribly most days, but I do try to get in the right amount of protein at least. I have little to no energy without enough protein in the morning. Chef Steff made his “Famous Spaghetti Pie” recipe and plates were handed out to everyone. I am the “pickiest eater in the World” seriously…and I loved this dish. I was so hungry and I could have eaten have the dish. I want to make this recipe soon! See picture above for recipe.

After hearing the awesome speakers, we went outside and took a group picture. It was a great way to start and finish the morning. And it made my race experience even more memorable, the day before the race.

Kelly and I had to give our friend, “Mickey Mouse” a little kiss goodbye after a fun morning!

**********

It was so amazing and inspiring to meet everyone and talk about our running and runDisney race experiences. The 2012 Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon was my first runDisney event, and it won’t be my last either! I can’t wait to tell you all about running the half marathon, but I will save that experience for a later date.

I can’t say enough how awesome this meet-up was and a great big thanks to Bob Hitchcock, Faron Kelly, Darrell Fry, Tony Morreale,  Jeff Galloway, Tara Gidus, Anton Van Zyl, Chef Steff, & anyone else who was apart of making this incredible morning happen!

Disclosure: I was invited by runDisney to attend the entire event weekend as media – meaning they were kind enough to cover my hotel expenses at the fabulous boardwalk  inn, meals, and my race fees. All thoughts & opinions are 100% my own. The photographs used in this post are courtesy of runDisney. It was super awesome to be able to enjoy an event without trying to capture the “perfect” shots {photos} while being in the moment.

Wordless Wednesday: Laguna Beach

Last weekend my friend’s baby shower was held here. You couldn’t ask for a better day. And if you are wondering, this is Laguna Beach, CA.

My view while at a baby shower in Laguna Beach earlier today.

Long Beach Half Marathon Race Recap

It has been several weeks, and almost a month since my first half marathon. I should have posted a race recap quite some time ago, but alas I have actually been training for my second half marathon.

This all started in May when I signed up for the Long Beach ICB Half Marathon. I have these crazy running friends who were encouraging me, so I signed up. I followed Hal Higdon’s Novice 2 Half Marathon Training Program religiously. I only missed one run, which was actually my longest run, a 12-mile one. I was extremely exhausted that day, got up to run, and only made it 3 miles.

The night before the race, I carb loaded at Buca di Beppo with friends who were also racing {KellyCarrie, and Elise}. Of course, those crazy girls were running the full marathon, and I was doing the half marathon. We had a delicious meal and we were ready to race the next morning.

The next morning I got up extra early, like 4am-ish, and got ready for the race. I wore my Team Sparkle tank top, Lululemon Run Shorty Shorts, blue Team Sparkle skirt, and my slime green Saucony Kinvara 3’s on race day. I carpooled to the race with my Super Hero Friends {photo below} Kelly, Carrie, and Elise to the race, because it is a large race and can get chaotic.

The "Girls of Team Sparkle" at The Long Beach Half MarathonCarrie {Wonder Woman), Elise {Bat Girl}, and Kelly {Super Girl} at The Long Beach ICB Marathon 2012. Photo via Kelly {according-to-kelly.com}.

We got to the race with enough time to go to the bathroom one last time, and then we found our places to start.

Pre-Long Beach Half Marathon 2012

I had my usual morning breakfast about an hour before the race; a Muscle Milk and a Dr. Pepper. Don’t judge, it works for me. I need the protein and caffeine to start my day. I found my corral {group} based on my estimated finish time, and got ready to race. It was a bit chaotic as the half marathon and full marathon runners were all starting at the same time. You could feel the excitement in the morning air.

And then the race started. I didn’t have an exact plan for my run, but rather, I just wanted to finish the race. Similar to my training runs, the first six miles were a breeze.  But then, we hit the trail along the beach and the sun was beaming. I started getting really hot. I had my hydration belt on with water and Nuun in my bottles, but I then started drinking water and Powerade at the rest stops along the way {huge mistake}. At about mile 10, my stomach started getting cranky, so I stopped to go to the bathroom. I thought I was ok after that, so I kept running. At about mile 10.5 my stomach got worse, and of course, I had already passed the last restroom.  Well let’s just say that miles 10.5 to 13.1 were not fun. I alternated between a jog/trot and walking because of my stomach. My stomach was getting progressively worse and I didn’t think that I was going to make it to the finish line.

Long Beach ICB Half Marathon 2012 Medal

Luckily, I made it to the finish line, grabbed my medal, and promptly ignored everything else. I asked one of the volunteers, “where is the bathroom?” I ran about a 1/4 of a mile to the bathrooms, and then boom, I had to wait in line. My stomach waited to purge itself until I made it into the porta-potty.  Unfortunately, there was no toilet paper left. HUGE PROBLEM! Stupid me, used a toilet seat cover as toilet paper. Well after being sore and raw for running, this just made my nether regions a bit raw.  It was not pretty. After finally calming down, I found a grassy area and just laid down.  I was lying on the ground thinking, “what the hell did I get myself into?”  Seriously, it was so hot, and I hurt so much. But then, some family friends found me and I finally recovered enough to sit up and chat with them. They probably thought that I was a total freak, but seriously, my stomach was still a bit angry.

I looked at my cellphone to see what time it was, and realized the Kelly, Carrie, and Elise would be finishing their race {full marathon} soon.  I made my way to the finish of the race, and cheered them on at the finish! They all finished together with a marathon finish of 3:58:39.

I had finally cooled off and I took a proper “Official Race Photo” with the step and repeat. Photo below borrowed from The Race Photographer, Brightroom. Ignore the graininess of the photo….cough cough screenshot….And if you are wondering, my final race time was 2:53:03. My 5K time was 34:46, my 10K time was 1:12:45, and my 10 mile time was 2:07:10. So you can see where I started slowing down, ummm right past mile 10. Total stomach fail!

Long Beach Half Marathon-Angry Julie

The lesson for the day: don’t drink you meals, don’t over-hydrate, and don’t drink Powerade during the race. I had way too much sugar in my system plus liquid. I’ve done a few long runs in the past month and I think I have figured out my eating/drinking situation now. I don’t drink anything until about mile 3 now, and then at about every 3 miles or so. I also don’t drink any of my meals (Muscle Milk, Juice It Up, Carnation Instant Breakfast, etc.) on the day that I’m doing a long run/race. And the caffeine, well I need a little of that. And I just need to stick with water or water with Nuun in it during the race.

Post-Long Beach Half Marathon 2012Post-Lunch Photo. You can’t even tell that I feel like I’m dying right there. Seriously, ouch! I just wanted a shower. Good thing you can’t smell me in this photo, because I was gross and nasty.

After we left the race, we headed towards a late lunch at Ruby’s Diner. My stomach still didn’t feel right so I only ate a little bit. After Ruby’s Diner, Kelly and I left to go home. I had carpooled with Kelly, but we made a little stop at the grocery store on the way home. I had some “chafing issues” and Kelly suggested Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. When I got home I took a shower, and slightly screamed a bit. Water hitting chafed areas is not a good feeling. I then applied the “butt paste” and relaxed for a few hours.

Running is kinda like having a baby. You say that you are “never going to do that again” after the pain from having a baby. Yet, people have multiple children, well other people, not me, hahahaha. But silly me, actually signed up for two more half marathons before I even did this first one. I signed up for The Disneyland Tinkerbell Half Marathon in January of 2013, and a late addition to the race schedule, The Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney World on November 10th. Yes, I have a half marathon next Saturday!!!

So Wednesday night, I will be flying off to Walt Disney World with Kelly for a little half marathon girl’s weekend. It is the weekend before my birthday, so it is my birthday half marathon. And this will also be my first trip to Walt Disney World, yippee!! And the best part, the race is at night, which means my body won’t be all messed up from the time difference between the east and west coast.

Wreck-It Ralph Movie

The movie Wreck-It Ralph came out yesterday and I have to tell you, it was awesome. I’m usually not one to love kid’s movies, but I love love loved Wreck-It Ralph.  My son loved it too. We were lucky to be invited to a preview of the movie about a week ago. I surprised my 7-year old son and took him after his soccer practice one night. I knew that he had seen several previews of the movie and was dying to see it.

Wreck-It Ralph

I have to admit, after seeing one of the previews for the movie, I secretly wanted to see Wreck-It Ralph also. It reminded me of the 80’s when I was a huge video gamer. I liked the simpler times with Pac Man, Frogger, and everything else on my Atari system. These games nowadays are so involved and confusing for me, ok maybe I’m getting old, but I know some people will understand.

My son is a huge gamer himself. Honestly, I think video gaming is in his DNA. My husband is a gamer also. I was totally bummed that the husband didn’t go with us, because he would have loved the movie also. My son promptly sat down with his popcorn and his 3-D glasses and waited for the movie to begin.

Before Wreck-It Ralph started, we were shown a short animation feature from Disney called “Paperman”.  This animated feature was a groundbreaking hybrid approach using computer-generated animation with hand drawn techniques.

Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man (George) in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman (Meg) on his morning commute. Convinced that the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him.

I loved Paperman as it was super sweet and the graphics/hand drawn designs were amazing.  It was great to see hand drawn animation on the big screen. There are some super talented artists out there. Thankfully, computers haven’t taken over the world just quite yet.

My son and I both give “Wreck-It Ralph” thumbs up! I loved all of the characters and thought they were great with having characters that boys and girls would connect with.  There is something for the entire family in this movie.  My son could not stop talking about the movie for several days after seeing it. He went to school the next day and told everyone about it. I think everyone was confused because the movie had not come out yet. I told several other parents that we saw a preview of the movie the night prior, and it is a must-see, especially for people who love video games.

A little synopsis of Wreck-It Ralph:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore comes “Wreck-It Ralph,” a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping adventure. For decades, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has been overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the good-guy star of their game who always gets to save the day. Tired of playing the role of a bad guy, Ralph takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a journey across the arcade through multiple generations of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.

On his quest, Ralph meets tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty, and feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) from the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush, who may just be his first real friend. But everything changes when a deadly enemy is unleashed, threatening the entire arcade and Vanellope herself. Ralph finally gets his chance to save the day—but can he do it in time? “Wreck-It Ralph” crashes onto the big screen on November 2, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

I think Wreck-It Ralph will be a huge hit in the theaters and I think I need to see it again. I know that my husband will appreciate it, especially with all of the 1980’s video game references.  You know, the 80’s, when I was actually good at video games.

Wordless Wednesday: Happy Halloween From My Little Zombie

My family has somewhat of a “Zombie Obsession”.  It was “decided” in September that Angry Kid (age 7) was going to be a zombie for Halloween. The costume was ordered and the make-up was being considered.  It is a good thing that I am an excellent Internet researcher. I found a great video on AMC’s Walking Dead Website with easy and cheap tips for Walking Dead-Like Zombie Make-Up.

My husband did my son’s make-up all by himself with a little Halloween make-up, liquid latex, and oatmeal for the texture/skin/scars.  We did a test drive for a friend’s party last Friday night. We are all ready for Halloween now!!

Yikes! We have been invaded by zombies! Time to prepare for the apocalypse! #walkingdead

Disneyland Half Marathon Race Expo with Team Sparkle

At the beginning of September, I went to The Disneyland Half Marathon Expo to help out my friends from Team Sparkle at their booth.  I love these women and asked if they needed my help.  Before I arrived at the Expo, I asked them what should I wear? I was told black shorts and running shoes, and that they would dress me up.

I showed up and was greeted by Tinkerbell (Kelly), Snow White (Carrie), and The Queen of Hearts (Elise).  Within a few minutes, I was transformed into Minnie Mouse.  I love all of the fun Running Costumes that Team Sparkle has come up with for Disney Running Events.

Minnie Mouse Running Costume via Team Sparkle

How I became Minnie Mouse:

Minnie Mouse Ears Headband (Disney Hotel Gift Shops/Parks)

“I Don’t Sweat, I Sparkle” Tank Top (Team Sparkle)

Red With White Polka Dot Sparkle Running Skirt (Team Sparkle)

Red With White Polka Dot Sparkle Sleeves (Team Sparkle)

LED Ring (Nite Beams)

Black Running Shorts (not shown, under skirt)

Running Shoes (Saucony Kinvara 3’s)

Yellow Yarn Pom Poms (Homemade By Me)

After my “Minnie” makeover was done, the “real fun” began.  I was there for Friday, the first day of the Expo. It is a busy weekend for Disneyland, and a HUGE Race Expo. The customers started lining up, and then the crowd began.  A ton of return customers showed up, along with some great new ones. Everyone loved all of our costumes, and loved the great running costume ideas that Team Sparkle had for The Disneyland Half Marathon, and other Run Disney Races.  The Red with White Polka Dot (Minnie) Sparkle Running Skirt was VERY popular that day, for obvious reasons.

Team Sparkle at Disneyland Half Marathon

But one of the biggest questions that people asked, was about “actually running in a costume”?  Kelly, whom is a veteran of running in costumes at Disney and other races, is the go-to-gal for running costumes.  Kelly advises, “that the runner test out the costume ahead of time, and make sure that it is comfortable.  You don’t want a floppy/fluffy/itchy costume that annoys you the entire that you are running.” 13.1 miles is a long distance to run.  Kelly and I have both seen plenty of people who have “stripped off” their costume during races.  You want to be able to finish the race and take those “finish line” pictures in your awesome costume.

@According2Kelly as Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell aka Kelly sporting a Team Sparkle Skirt, Sparkle Sleeves, Race Legs, and Wings.  Tinkerbell got a bit cold during the Race Expo.

Tinkerbell and her wings

Tinkerbell’s wings from the back. Didn’t you know that Tink needs her iPhone to contact all of the other fairies? She tucks her iPhone into the back of her Sparkle Skirt. (Kelly is going to kill me for posting this photo, but it shows the back of her wings)

How To Wear Wings While Running is one of my favorite posts that Kelly has written. Kelly has worn running costumes with “wings” several times and has perfected “running with wings” and “wing attachment for running”.  Her post includes a great tutorial.

Even though I only worked the booth at the expo for about four hours, it felt like an entire day.  Being on your feet all day is tiring. I feel for everyone that is constantly working race expos because it is exhausting.  I had a blast though, and I loved talking to everyone about running and races. There was a such a wide variety of people and different types of runners.

With a little help, we even got a group picture of Snow White (Carrie), The Queen of Hearts (Elise), Tinkerbell (Kelly), and Minnie Mouse (Me).  My camera was on a bad setting, hence the discoloration.

Team Sparkle at Disneyland Half Marathon Expo

You are probably wondering if I ran The Disneyland Half Marathon that weekend? Carrie, Elise, and Kelly ran the race, but I did not. I wasn’t able to register in time before it sold out (it sells out fast), and I had not finished my training.  I did the Awesome 80’s Run that weekend, and The Long Beach Beach Half Marathon (post coming soon) about a month after that.  I’m currently training for my second half marathon, which is my first Disney Race, The Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon on November 10th at Walt Disney World.  I’m running the race with Kelly, and I’m calling it my “Birthday Half Marathon” as it is the weekend before my actual birthday. And I’m still trying to figure out my costume for that race, and of course I will be wearing a Team Sparkle Skirt.

Hephzi Creations, Hello Kitty, and Queen Bee Market

I have a huge love for anything Hello Kitty. Actually I’m pretty obsessed. Yes, I’m thirty-six, almost thirty-seven years old and I’m admitting this.  I’ve been a fan since I was a little girl. I was a child of the 80’s, and Hello Kitty was super popular when I was growing up.  I remember buying Hello Kitty scented pens and  cute metal pencil boxes when I was in elementary school.  In high school, my Hello Kitty obsession continued with note paper and pens. I used to buy special paper from Sanrio to write notes to my friends on.

I recently had the opportunity to do a review of a  handmade Hello Kitty bracelet/necklace/headband set from Hephzi Creations.  Hephzi Creations is owned by Angela whom “creates unique and whimsical pieces of jewelry created to celebrate a woman’s soul.”

Hello Kitty Bracelet/Necklace/Headband from Hephzi Creations

Have you ever tried to put a bracelet on yourself? Let’s just say that it wasn’t happening. I had to wait for a friend to come over and put the bracelet on for me. Then I took a picture of my arm all by myself.  I probably should have put it on her arm, but umm I wasn’t thinking quite straight. But look at Hello Kitty, isn’t she cute?

Hello Kitty Bracelet/Necklace/Headband from Hephzi Creations

Look at all of the details.  I love the different colored jewels and the butterflies around the bracelet. Everything is super cute and vintage looking.

Hello Kitty Bracelet/Necklace/Headband from Hephzi Creations

Using an elastic band that came with the 3-in-1 Hello Kitty accessory, I was able to make a headband. The headband wasn’t loose either, it fit very secure.  Ignore my messy hair. I took this picture right after my morning shower.  And the picture, totally an iPhone self-portrait.

Hello Kitty Bracelet/Necklace/Headband from Hephzi Creations

Obviously, a plain white t-shirt does not compliment this necklace. Using the extra chain provided, it is now a necklace also.  Super cute!!! It has a great vintage eclectic feel to it. And of course, Hello Kitty just makes it cuter! Ignore the greasy looking hair…focus on the Hello Kitty…..

Hephzi Creations are for all ages…whether it be kids, tweens, teens, and even adults! They are fun accessories and the 3-in-1 bracelet/necklace/headband combo gives so much variety.

You can find Hephzi Creations at the following places online

Facebook, Twitter, Blog, and Etsy Store

Want to hear something even more awesome?

Hephzi Creations is going to be at The Queen Bee Market, which is going on tomorrow October 27th. The Queen Bee Market will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 9am-3pm in Aliso Viejo at The Aliso Viejo Conference Center, 31 Santa Barbara Drive, Aliso Viejo.

Disclosure: I was provided a 3-in-1 Hello Kitty accessory for review purposes, free of charge via Hephzi Creations. I was not compensated in any other way. Thoughts, opinions, randomness, photos, and even really bad iPhone self-portraits are all taken by me.
