Tuesday’s Thoughts…

It has been almost two weeks since my last blog post. I apologize. Every time I sit down to write a blog post, I get distracted. Mostly because I have to edit the photographs for my posts, which takes forever. I have a zillion posts in draft, waiting for additional photos, links, etc.

I have been rehab’ing myself a bit also. I hurt my knee during the Tinker Bell Half Marathon {post in progress} in January. After going to my regular doctor, I moved on to a chiropractor/physical therapist. He was recommended to me by my superstar running friend, Kelly.

Rehab'ing my hurt knee

I had been having groin pain in my left side since October/Novemberish. And my hip started hurting in December…then you add in my total knee buckle/collapse at the end of January. I had to figure out what was going on. Some people in my life think that “I need to stop running so much”. Ya, thanks for the support and encouragement folks….not!

I found out that my main issue was a problem with my psoas. “The psoas (so-az) muscle runs through your hips to connect the lower portion of your back to the top of your thigh. It’s one of your body’s main back stabilizers and hip flexors (the muscles that line your hips and allow you to bring your knees toward your chest).” By sitting for a prolonged time {umm work, 40+ hours}, my iliacus and psoas shortened over time. This shortening of the muscle has caused the groin, hip, and now knee pain. It also caused my left leg {non dominant} to be weaker.

So we some physical therapy/active release, stretching, and massage….I am actually ok. I’m so happy that my aches and pains were nothing major. But I just need to remember that I have to stretch throughout the day or else I will start having these problems again.

Ready to run Surf City Half Marathon

The day after my 2nd physical therapy appointment, I ran a half marathon {Surf City} and PR’ed {personal record}. I beat my fastest time by 7+ minutes. Yippee! The PR totally made up for my race fail, Tinker Bell Half, in January. I also wore an awesome new skirt design from Team Sparkle. Isn’t it cute?

I was a bit dehydrated after that race, and I will talk more about the actual race in a future post {seriously, post in draft}.

Watching the end of season 4 of Alias. Just startes season 5 a few minutes ago. I heart Netflix. #10on10

I started watching Alias on Netflix a few months ago, and never quite finished all of the seasons. I’ve spent the past few days trying to finish watching it. I’m mid-way through Season 5 now. I will miss Sydney Bristow when it’s over, sigh.

All boy. iPad gaming, and hole in the knee of his jeans. #10on10

I attempted to participate in #10on10 this past Sunday. Ten on ten means posting ten pictures from throughout the day. I started posting them on Instagram. By the end of the day, I only had 6 photos taken. I’m a total fail. It’s hard to get photos when you are being lazy, and you have to work. My son has his own iPad but I guess my latest generation iPad with blue sparkly Juicy Couture case is more awesome than his.

Finally got around to hanging up my Valentine's Day decor. Love this wreath my cousin-in-law made last year for me. #10on10

Oh hai…Valentine’s Day creeped up on me this year. I have a ton of cute decorations but I somehow misplaced them all. Dumb! I did find this super cute wreath that my husband’s cousin made me last year. I hope to organize my house someday so I have all of my Holiday decor in one place. I figured out Valentine’s Day cards for my son to bring to his class party this week, and they are already finished, yippee!

So that about covers it…..

I’m trying to run again {slowly} without injuring myself. I just started training today for the OC Half Marathon, which is on May 5. I’ve been busy with school projects/homework/etc. with my son. I’m working a new schedule at work {adjusting still}. And I’m addicted to Netflix {nothing new}.

Did you miss me?

Totally Rad Running Songs

So you are probably already thinking, “oh great another running post, yawn”. But really this is more of a “really awesome music” type of post. And ya, maybe, you could even run or workout to it!

I could not run without music, or my Garmin. I do not run Amish! Seriously, I’m not sure if I could go a mile without stalking my pace, or loud music paving my way. I also don’t run with headphones or earbuds, unless I’m at the gym. I usually put my iPhone in my fuel belt and blast the music at it’s loudest. I may wince a little with the songs with the explicit lyrics come on though.

I’ve compiled a list of some of the raddest songs that I have on my iPhone currently. Some are old songs, some are new. But they work for me, and maybe they could work for you?

runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Meet-Up

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend a pre-race meet-up with runDisney for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. We met at The Disneyland Hotel at 6am in the morning. Yes, that early! Luckily, I stayed with Kelly at Disney’s Grand Californian the night prior.

After we arrived and checked in, we were given “runDisney” tech shirts to wear for the event.  I’m wearing the light blue Team Sparkle Skirt on the left side of the photo. After some brief introductions of runDisney personnel and special guests, we headed out for a run through the parks. Special Guest Jeff Galloway was leading the group using his run/walk method. Notice anyone famous in the front of the pack in the photo below? Yep, that’s Sean Astin running in the royal blue shorts.

We headed through Disneyland first, and at 6am, the park was very quiet. As we headed towards the Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, everyone stopped to take pictures with their cellphones. I had my point-and-shoot camera, and had to capture everyone in the group taking their photos. It was quite hilarious.

Of course, the “official photographer” took a much better picture of the runners “storming the castle” from the backside. I was hiding in the back of the crowd. Looking at all of the fun skirts that everyone is wearing! I spy several of my friends in this picture.

We got to meet a surprise guest while running through Disneyland. Tinker Bell was super cute in her winter-themed frock. I loved the little touches of fur through the collar and sleeves on her coat.

After running through Disneyland, we headed towards Disney California Adventure to finish off the 2.5 miles. I love California Adventure and there is so much to look at. I love this photo that I captured while we were running on the boardwalk.

After running around Disney California Adventure, we stopped to take some pictures with the characters, and group pictures. It was a great time. And I loved hanging out with Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy.

After a fun run, photo session, and riding The Radiator Springs Racers, we headed toward Napa Rose for some breakfast and guest speakers.

Jeff Galloway {not pictured above} spoke about the run/walk/run method which he is famous for. Josh Rowe, the marketing manager for New Balance spoke about the new specially designed shoes that New Balance made for runDisney. People had been waiting in line for several hours to get into the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Expo to purchase these limited edition shoes. They only had 250 pairs to sell that weekend, and they SOLD OUT!

Sean Astin spoke about running marathons/half marathons and his Team #run3rd.  Team #run3rd is comprised of three things: 1. 1st I run for me 2. I run for my family and 3. I run for YOU.

Ali Vincent, the first female winner of The Biggest Loser spoke about her Live Big Campaign. Ali has a show “Live Big with Ali Vincent” on the LiveWell Network. Ali speaks about fitness tips, healthy living, and healthy eating on the show.

Tara Gidus, a dietician is the Official runDisney nutritionist. Tara spoke about running, and pre-race nutrition. I’ve met Tara before and she is awesome!

There were some great giveaways during and in-between the speakers. Some New Balance running shoes, runDisney travel suitcases, and even a race registration for the Dumbo Dare Challenge was given away. Unfortunately, I was not a winner. Insert sad face.

After great things about nutrition and eating well, we were treated to a special recipe of a black bean cake from Disney Executive Chef Christine Weissman.

It was a great and informative morning with runDisney. I seriously love runDisney races and events. This was my 2nd Disney race and I am hooked! I highly suggest watching {stalking} the Disney Parks Blog for information about pre-race meet-ups with runDisney the week before the actual race.

Speaking of runDisney and their awesome races….The Disneyland Half Marathon, Dumbo Dare and new added 10K registration was opened this week and it sold out in a record breaking 26 hours! Unfortunately, I took about 2 minutes to walk to my dining room to get my credit card after filling out information to register for the Dumbo Dare, and it sold out! I was totally bummed.

“Runner response to the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is overwhelming,” says Disney Sports Marketing and Communication Director Faron Kelley.  “This points to the growing popularity of runDisney events and runner demand for two-day, back-to-back race challenges, along with the ever popular 10K distance.”

A very limited number of registrations are available for the half marathon and 10K through charity and travel groups.  Runners can get more information on these opportunities by going to runDisney.

In addition, registration remains open for the Family Fun Run 5K and runDisney Kids Races. These races are filling quickly so runners are encouraged to register today at runDisney.

Disclosure: I was invited to the runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Meet-Up as a Blogger/Media. I was provided a runDisney tech tee, a run through the parks, fabulous guest speakers, breakfast and a park-hopper ticket. Photographs from the event were provided via Disney. All other photographs are mine and/or friends. All thoughts and opinions are mine.

Wordless Wednesday: My Style at the runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Expo

Last Friday I helped my friends at Team Sparkle at the race expo for the runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend. Of course, we {awesome people who work at the Team Sparkle booth, etc.} love to run in costume! So we had to represent, and show off how we incorporate a bit of Disney into our running costumes.

I work these awesome couture ears all day with their gold and black polka dot skirt. It was an awesome and unique “Minnie Mouse” costume.

Rocked the gold "Limited Time Magic" ear hat today @runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Expo while working the @runTeamSparkle booth wearing the gold mini dot skirt. I got tons of compliments. #teamsparkle #tinkhalf #tinkerbellhalf #rundisney #limitedtime

Oh, and I completed my outfit with the Limited Edition “runDisney Minnie Mouse New Balance running shoes”. They only had 250 pairs to sell last weekend, and they went FAST! As of right now, they are only sold at the race expos!!

The mythical, the awesome @runDisney Minnie Mouse "Special Edition" @nbrunning shoes! So excited I got a pair! #rundisney #tinkhalf #tinkerbellhalf #newbalance #runchat

SYSWW with Bringing Up Burns

I love “group text messages” because they can get pretty funny, plus they provide material for blog posts. Actually, several of my blog posts have been inspired by a text message or two. I had an awesome group text with Erin a few days ago. We were discussing WIWW-What I’m Wearing Wednesday, which is a great weekly meme where women post outfits from the past few days. This all started to get people to wear less sweatpants, and to accessorize and make more of their usual outfits.

But I wear a uniform for real job {work}, FIVE DAYS A WEEK! And my other uniform for my part time job {running, ha} is workout clothing. Honestly, I want comfy clothing when I’m not working or running. Believe me, I do have some cute clothing in my closet. It’s there behind all of the solid colored t-shirts from Gap, and hoodies.

So Erin came up with a rad new meme for people like us SYSWW aka “Shit You Shouldn’t Wear Wednesday”. She posted about it on Thursday. I’ve been super busy wearing clothing that should be featured on SYSWW the past few days. I may have been wearing an awesome outfit on Wednesday when our group text began.

SYSWW-Outfit of the Week, Angry Julie Monday

I took this photo around 10am on Wednesday. I had to refer to my text messages for proof. I may have taken my son to school in this fancy attire. Everyone is quite lucky that I did not get out of the car.  Although the owl pj pants from Target, green Gap t-shirt, and my “run” hoodie….I wear this hoodie a lot, like several times a week. It is quite ridiculous.

I have been tapering this week for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon on Sunday. Tapering= Not Running 20+ miles a week. Tapering = Julie having too much free time. I also switched work schedules and I have my mornings free now. My mornings this week have consisted of getting up, dropping kid off at school, coming home, thinking about working out, and deciding to get back in bed under my warm covers…to watch Homeland.

Homeland Logo

Ya, I’m a bit late to this Homeland thing. Ok, I have to admit that we just got DirecTV in December, and we have the pay/big money channels free right now. So after hearing everyone rave about Homeland, I started watching it via OnDemand last week. I just got to Season 2 yesterday. I have several episodes to finish, so if you are wondering what is keeping me busy, well it is Homeland.

Although my husband who watches it at night sometimes, admits that he can’t get over the lead actor Damian Lewis who plays Nicolas Brody. Damian Lewis played Richard “Dick” Winters in my husband’s favorite series ever, Band of Brothers. Although, I think that is why I love watching the show even more now.

Little Mermaid Photos

Yay, my outfit isn’t very stylish. I went to Disneyland yesterday, and took some awesome photos while on the Little Mermaid Ride. Ariel and Ursula are so rad in their own ways. It isn’t every day that you meet a natural redhead and one of the most popular Disney villains. I think I would rather have the tail though, and a cute little fish friend, though.

Back to the original point of this post….It is ok to wear awesome owl jammies. Just make sure you brush your hair and take a shower. You don’t want to be mistaken for a 1. homeless person 2. mental health patient or my favorite, 3. Walmart shopper. And the glasses are my favorite part. I had no reason to put my contacts in, so I rocked my white Tiffany & Co. glasses.

So if you want to join in on the fun, be sure to post your very own, SYSWW outfits! Be rad like Erin and me.

Wordless Wednesday: Reflection at Cinderella’s Castle

A view of Kelly and Cinderella’s Castle at Magic Kingdom in November of 2012.

The last time that I ran a half marathon race was at Disney’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney World in November 2012. I took this photo that weekend. I’m still behind in my photo editing. But I thought I would share this, a few days before my next half marathon, Disney’s Tinker Bell Half Marathon this Sunday.

Hello Monday, The Mid-January Edition

Hello Monday!

Hello Blog!

I’ve been super swamped the past few weeks, and I’ve neglected my blog a bit. You know it’s bad when one of your husband’s friends mentions that you haven’t blogged. He told me that I better have a post up so that he has something to read when he gets in to work on Monday. So Pete….look at me, I’m blogging!

Hello Wahoo’s Fish Tacos

Wahoo’s Fish Tacos is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year! I’ve been eating there since I was in high school. I usually eat there at least once a week now, sometimes more. I love their blackened chicken.

Lunchtime! @wahoosfishtaco

Hello To More Running in 2013!

Yes, I’m still running. I know, I’m crazy, right?

I have two half marathons coming up soon. I’ve been pretty good about following my training plan.

I’m working on a new “running songs” playlist for 2013. My music tastes are quite varied. Please don’t judge. My husband can’t stand my music, most days. The kid, well, he loves my music.

Working on a new for 2013 Running Songs Playlist! Need some tunes for my 12-miler tomorrow! cc: @bringingupburns

 Hello To Inline Hockey!

My son is learning to play a new sport. Several of my husband’s friends play inline hockey, and our son was quite interested.

The kid received a ton of hockey gear {wow, an expensive sport} for Christmas. He needs to learn how to skate on inline skates first.

We did an open skate session last week with the BFF. The kid is slowly learning.

First rule of playing hockey. Learning to skate.

 Hello Ice Hockey!

Speaking of hockey! Did you hear? NHL Hockey is coming back! I know several people who have been patiently waiting for hockey.

We attended a collegiate ice hockey game last Saturday night, USC vs. UCLA. Poor USC lost. They need to work on their defense.

Yes, USC has an ice hockey team. Game vs. UCLA tonight!

Hello New Year, Hello House Projects!

There is always something going on in our house. I have several different projects going on…in my head.

But my husband decided that he wanted to re-do the “storage” in our garage. Which means, longer beams….sawdust…messes..and chaos.

He is partially done. And although we may have more storage, there is no way that I’m climbing up there.

But my son was delighted to climb up the ladder…and do a little Gangnam Style dance for us!

Husband is re-doing garage rafters. I found my son up there...dancing Gangnam Style.

Hello Busy!

So if you are wondering what I’ve been up to, that’s it! All of my photos were from my Instagram account. My Instagram account pretty much shows my daily activities {boring life}.

Is everyone else excited that it is Monday? A new week, a new start?

Ya, that’s what I thought!

Linking up with Lisa Leonard and her Hello Monday series!
