Surf City Half Marathon Race Recap

At the beginning of February, I ran the Surf City Half Marathon in Huntington Beach, CA. This was my 4th Half Marathon. I had run Disney’s Tinker Bell Half Marathon two weeks prior to the Surf City Half Marathon.

Surf City Half Marathon Race Expo

The Friday before the race, I went to the race expo with my friend and co-worker, Monique. We got to the expo right when it opened and there was quite a long line.

We eventually made our way in to get our race bibs, shirts, and other goodies. I walked around the expo, and ended up buying a tank top. We made it around the entire expo and found Surf City’s own version of the step and repeat. I love their ocean/surfboard and race medal set-ups.

Unfortunately, I had to walk most of the Tinker Bell Half Marathon due to my knee buckling on me because of an injury to my psoas. The next day {Saturday} prior to Surf City Half, I made a visit to an awesome chiropractor/physical therapist. He was able to diagnose my problem and instructed me about stretching out my leg. He then applied some KT Tape for precautionary reasons and sent me on my way.

Irony. Knee injury taped with @kttape after physical therapy & @runnersworld "Injury Prevention Special" issue which came in the mail yesterday.
After leaving physical therapy, I came home and rested for awhile. And read my most current copy of Runner’s World, because, why not?

I then went to work for a few hours as I was only working a partial shift. After work, I went to Wahoo’s Fish Tacos for some pre-race dinner fuel. I got a kid’s chicken bowl and some chips + salsa.

Pre-Race Dinner at Wahoo's Fish Tacos for Surf City Half Marathon
After eating, I went home and showered. I noticed that the KT Tape on my knee was starting to peel. So I headed over to my KT Tape specialist, Kelly’s house. I needed a re-application to my knee. I brought some pink KT Tape Pro with me, because it would match my race outfit, of course!

I showed up to Kelly’s with some frozen yogurt from Yogurtland as a bribe! It worked. She did a great job taping my knee. My knee wasn’t hurting at all. But I didn’t want to take the risk of something happening while I was running.

I then went home to sleep, because I had a VERY early wake-up. I can’t remember what time I woke up exactly, but it was sometime in the 4am time range. Eeek!

@AngryJulie ready to run Surf City Half Marathon 2013

Hey look at me! Wide awake at umm 6-ish in the morning and ready to race! Monique and I carpool’ed. We found Casey and Jenn amongst the race chaos before the race started.

I chose to wear a Team Sparkle skirt for race day. I wanted to wear one of their newer designs, a pink/yellow/black cheetah print Team Sparkle Skirt. I wore my Lululemon run shorty shorts {no longer made, boo!} underneath the skirt. I wore a Nike sports bra and a Lululemon black cool racerback {crb} on top. I switched out my plain black visor at the last minute for a pink Team Sparkle visor. And I wore my brand new Brook’s PureFlow 2 running shoes to race in. I totally committed a race sin also, because I had bought my Brooks the week before and had only worn them 2 times, but they felt fine. I had my Garmin 310XT ready to go on my wrist, along with a Nathan Hydration Belt around my waist. I have to ALWAYS run with water because I take a daily medication that dehydrates me and gives me cotton mouth.

Monique and I before Surf City Half Marathon

Monique and I were able to get a photo together before the race. There are some official race photos of us together, but they are super pricey. So unless a discount code comes along, I’m not buying any.

We then got into the corrals {sections} to start the race. We didn’t really go with our predicted pace times. We pushed up to the front groups because otherwise, it would be FOREVER before we started. I’m glad that we started right away because it was super hot at the end of the race and I would have been dying from heat stroke.

Great photo of me by @caseyruns when I was trying to post a photo on @Instagram at the @lovesurfcity 1/2 Marathon yesterday. I couldn't get any cell service. #surfcity #teamsparkle

Photo via Casey.

But oh wait, I need to send an Instagram out before the race starts…Ya that didn’t happen. I had barely any cell service the entire race. I heard a ton of people complaining about the cell service after the race. Not that the race management company could do anything about the service. But unfortunately, many people tried to run with Internet-based music apps. I made a music playlist prior to the race based on the music from this post I did. Everyone complimented me on my music along the way. I don’t wear any earbuds while running, so the music just blasts out.

Race: We started running on PCH then we turned on Seapoint right before mile 3. It was a nice change of pace cause running PCH was boring…While we were taking a little 3 mile detour {part of the course though} from PCH, we ran downhill, then uphill, then around, then downhill again. I was able to pick up some speed before mile 6.

We then continued down PCH until mile 8, where we did a u-turn. I seriously thought it took forever from mile 6 to mile 8 turn-around. And then we keep running on PCH. On my way back to the finish line, I noticed a ton of injured people. I saw ambulances on their way. I’m not sure what type of injuries had occurred, but I had never seen so many medics working on people at a race.

At about mile 11, the sun was glaring, and it made me a bit nauseous. I’m pretty sure it was the salt in the air, the ocean view, and the sun glaring at me. I think my usual mile 11-13.1 wall. But I kept going on.

I finally finished the race and I grabbed a water, and my medal of course. I had to sit down for a few minutes because I felt icky. I eventually got up and walked to the finish line photo area. After that, I met up with some friends while I waited for Monique.

After I found Monique, we took some photos and then started walked towards my car. I still didn’t feel quite right, so I asked if I could sit down for a few minutes.

Umm ya, post-Surf City Half Marathon

And then this happened…

Monique left to fetch me some water to drink…and came back with the medics a few minutes later. They advised me that my color did not look right. I said that I felt queasy and just needed some water. They hooked me up to heart monitors and tested my blood sugar, which came out fine. They suggested that I go to the hospital but I refused.

So eventually, I made it back to the medical tent via Huntington Beach Fire Department, and got some water. I sat there for a few minutes drinking water while Monique went and got my car. She ended up driving us back to my house.

I had Monique stop on the way home for some Gatorade, which I slowly drank. I felt like I needed to dry heave/throw-up but I couldn’t. When I got home, I drank some water slowly, and then some Coke. I seriously felt a ton better after resting and drinking the sugar/caffeine.

Later that night, after resting, while my husband had 15 people over for a Superbowl Party, I ate some carne asada tacos and felt 150% better.

Surf City Half Marathon Finisher's Medal 2013

When all was said and done, I realized that I had PR’ed {personal record} the race by at least 7 minutes from my fastest time. I had no issues during the race, but rather post-race. Stacey the BFF told me that I have a race curse because SOMETHING always happens. And I qualified for Half Fanatics!

Half Fanatics

I qualified for Half Fanatics by completing two half marathons {Neptune} within 16 days. I’m Half Fanatic #3607. I also completed race #2 of #3 for the Beach Series Challenge Medal.

So as of right now, my next half marathon will be the OC Half Marathon on May 5th. I’m sorta having a hard time training right now because my work schedule changed and I’m not used to running during the day. But I am training!

Wordless Wednesday: Colorful Correspondence

I had to mail a package to a friend recently, so I included a cute notecard. I miss sending cute cards and notes. I added some whimsy to it by using some of my awesome Sharpies!

Had to break out the jar of rainbow @Sharpie pens to write on a cute card today.

Do you still send out cards and note to your friends/family in the mail? Is it easier to send a text/email rather than buy a cute card?

I think I need to send out cards more often!

Hello Monday…Almost March

Hello Monday!

Hello to starting a fresh new week! Eeek…

Hello to school {for the kid}, work {me and the hubs}, dentist appointments, run club {kid}, running {me}, and soccer {kid}!

Things You Find In A Runner's House: @nuunhydration & @runTeamSparkle water bottles everywhere, along with running clothes taking up the shower curtain rod. #teamsparkle #running #runchat

Hello to never catching up!

You know how you always wish for a week free of commitments so you can just be lazy? And then that week happens, and you are totally bored and unmotivated?

Ya, that never happens around my house. I remember those times. But mostly, my house and life is chaos. My kitchen looks like this {with water bottles everywhere}, and my son’s bathroom looks like this {running clothes hanging}.

Trying out chairs with super tall backs @Homegoods.

Hello to taking the kid out shopping!

My mom wanted my opinion on some things at Homegoods. We also made our way to Costco. My son was not impressed. But the chair he was sitting in, super cool!

Totally bought this cute swimsuit @DownEastBasics tonight. I needed a new swimsuit bad! #downeastbasics
Hello there new swimsuit!

I went to a blogger event at DownEast Basics last week and came home with a new swimsuit. I tried on a couple of things and went back and forth on them.

I’ve become really picky about clothing recently. I make sure that I really love something before I purchase it. I used to grab something off the rack, guess my size, and then I would live with it.

But…I did take a chance….that night. I LOATHE swimsuit shopping. But this blue and green tankini with cute little anchors caught my eye. And it fit! Super cute! It covers most of my lumps and bumps, and I feel comfortable in it! Win! Win!

My wild and crazy mutts setting themselves up to brawl.
Hello crazy dogs!

If it is sunny outside, our dogs love to go out and play in the front yard. Our backyard is like a concrete jungle so they get bored. As soon as I open the front door, they are practically begging to race through the house and run into the front yard.

And about five seconds later you hear growling amongst the two dogs. They love to play-fight with each other. I caught them in a stand off the other day.

Who's gonna rock Race on the Base in her @runTeamSparkle camouflage skirt today??? Me! #raceonthebase #teamsparkle
Hello there camouflage sparkle skirt!

Saturday morning, I ran my first 10K race with my friend, Monique. I’ve ran many 5K races, and 4 half marathons, but never any 10K’s. I love wearing this green camouflage skirt from Team Sparkle.

Hello to race curse being over!

I will write my race recap later, but I was happy to finish the race without any “issues” like I usually do. Yippee!

So Hello Monday!

Hello to March 1st at the end of this week!

Hello to Spring Soccer Season!

Hope everyone has a good week!

Linking up with Lisa Leonard and her Hello Monday series!

Disclosure: I attend an event at DownEast Basics and was given a $25 giftcard which I used towards the purchase of my swimsuit.

Disney’s Tinker Bell Half Marathon Race Recap

The weekend of Disney’s Tinker Bell Half Marathon was quite a busy one. On Friday morning, I attended a super fun meet-up with runDisney, and had a blast. After the meet-up, I worked the race expo with my friends at Team Sparkle. And then I went to work for a few hours.

On Saturday, I got my race packet and bib and went home for a few hours. My friend, Kelly was sick, and I had realized that I was also getting sick. I knew that this was not going to be good. And luckily, my husband came home to take my son to a birthday party.

After napping a few hours, and packing more stuff, I made my way towards the Disney’s Grand California where I would be spending the night before the race. Although, I only live about 15 minutes away from Disneyland, I would have had to get up at like 2am to get ready and drive to the race with traffic delays etc.

Kelly and I both were sick, and didn’t not feel like doing anything that night. We were both miserable, so we stayed in the hotel room for the night, rather than going out to dinner. Because I love to run in “costume”, I worked on some of the last minute details for my costume while hanging out in the room.

Why Run When You Can Fly? Testing out part of my running costume for tomorrow's @runDisney #tinkhalf Can you guess what I'm wearing? @runTeamSparkle #teamsparkle #rundisney #tinkerbellhalf

I picked up this cute shirt “Why Run When You Can Fly?” {not my race outfit} and green sparkle visor from Team Sparkle. I added a red feather to the interior of the visor with duct tape for my “Peter Pan” style. I was test driving the visor to see if the feather irritated me and it didn’t.

Pre-Race Carb Loading

Obviously we had a race {half marathon} the next day and we needed to eat some dinner. So we made the easiest choice, room service! We couldn’t decide exactly what we wanted so we ordered several things. My main meal was pasta, and it was delicious. Seriously, I loved it! I think Kelly had a hamburger, soup, quesadilla, and a tarte? We really didn’t eat that much because our eyes were bigger than our stomaches.

Peter Pan Running Costume

I wore a green short sleeve Under Armour shirt, Lululemon black Run Shorty Shorts {discontinued}, green tights, green Team Sparkle Skirt, slime green Saucony Kinvara 3s, and a green Team Sparkle Visor as my Peter Pan costume. I also had on a hydration belt and a brown cloth sash for a belt {not pictured}.

After organizing out stuff, and laying out our outfits, Kelly and I went to bed. We had a 3:15am wake-up, or maybe 3:30am, I’m not sure, it was EARLY!

Ready to race The Tinker Bell Half Marathon. So Kelly and I managed to get up at the crack o’ dawn, and we got ready. I was that crazy person who jumped in the shower before getting ready. I have to have my hair wet to do it, and I wanted it slick. I wore the tights under my outfit because the race started at 5am, and it was semi-cold outside. I was feeling super sick the night prior and I actually woke up feeling a ton better.

The starting line to the race was right outside our hotel, so we had a super short walk, yippee!! We walked out there around 4am, and had about an hour until the race started. We stood around took some pictures and spoke with fellow runners.

@according2kelly as Mr. Smell. Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2013

Kelly chose to run as “Mr. Smee” {Captain Hook’s trusted assistant} in her costume of a blue Team Sparkle Skirt, sparkle sleeves, and race legs. I had no idea who Mr. Smee was until Kelly told me.

Kelly and I got to hang out with Sean Astin at the starting line. He was showing us a video of his daughter running the kid’s race the day before. It was super cute. RunDisney posted this photo on their Facebook page too.

And then we were off…..You can see me on the right side of this photo in the green behind the woman in the red shirt. I was super excited to see this photo, and even more excited to be able to find myself in the photo!

I’m not one of those “running bloggers” where I kept track of all my running stats, etc…but I do know that I started off pacing at 8:30/9:00 minute miles. I was running a lot more faster than my usual pace. It also helped that we went up some minor hills and then ran downhill.

Posing with the Pixar crew at Tinker Bell Half

As we made it into Disney’s California Adventure, I stopped to pose for this photo with the Pixar crew. When I ran the Wine and Dine Half Marathon in November, I didn’t stop for any of the character photo shoots, and was totally bummed.

World of Color, California Adventure during runDisney's Tinker Bell Half Marathon

One of the best parts about starting a race at 5am {the crack of dawn} is that it was still dark outside and I could take a super awesome photo like this. I forgot to add earlier that I took my Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot camera in my hydration belt along with my iPhone for photos.

Hanging out with Phineas and Ferb at Tinker Bell 1/2

Love Phineas and Ferb. Photo a bit blurry but still cute! Oh, and I was still running between these photo stops…giggle.

After running through Disney’s California Adventure, we headed across the way to run through Disneyland.

Running through Sleeping Beauty's Castle during Tinker Bell Half Marathon

Sleeping Beauty’s Castle looked so magical and it was fun to run in and around!

A little Star Wars moment during the Tinker Bell Half Marathon

Oh hai there, Star Wars guys. I wish that this photo came out more clear, because I would have loved to frame it. I looked at the official race photo that was also taken at this stop, and it was much better. I think I want to buy it!

And ironically, this was the last moment of the race that I enjoyed for quite some time……

As I ran towards the Finding Nemo ride, my knee started being wonky. My left knee just started to buckle on me. I hadn’t really had any knee problems for quite some time. I was having issues with my knee when I started running again last Spring, but nothing like this. I stopped and tried to stretch out my knee, to see if I could make it feel any better.

My knee did not feel better….and I was devastated. As my BFF Stacey says, “I have a race curse!” EVERY race I’ve had some kind of issue. And during this race, it was my knee. It hurt so bad and I couldn’t really put the pressure of running on it. I texted Kelly in a panic that my knee blew out. I knew that she wouldn’t get my text until she finished the race, but I wanted her to know.

And this is when I started walking….and I hadn’t even hit mile 4 yet…when meant I had over 9 miles left in the race. But I am stubborn and I wanted that medal. So I started walking/trotting along. Yes, it completely sucked, but I did it. I had to stop several times during the rest of the race to stretch out my knee, hold back the tears, and pull myself together. Luckily, because I started the race off fast, I was a little ahead of the game. Final time, 3:31:27 which was a total PW {Personal Worst} for me, but I finished.

Several of my friends had already left to go home, but I was happy to see Kelly waiting at the finish line for me. I got my medal, and hobbled through the crowd to meet up with her. I whined about just getting back to our motel room so that I could ice my knee and stretch it out.

Post-Tinker Bell Half Marathon
Post-Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2013, @AngryJulie as Peter Pan
Before I stripped of my race clothes, I took some “finisher” photos in the hotel room. This would be post-race finisher couture. But hey, it works. It was sooo crowded post-race and there was no way I could stop and get a photo without getting trampled.

Injured knee after the Tinker Bell Half Marathon

After sitting in the bathtub for about 20 minutes, I beached myself on the bed with a big bag of ice. Sigh…I had post-race fail depression. Since we got up so early, Kelly and I took naps. We had already scheduled a late check-out and so we had a few hours to relax before leaving the hotel.

After relaxing a bit, we decided that we should motivate ourselves to get some food. Kelly was nice enough to attempt to mend/fix my knee with some KT Tape. I also put on my favorite Zensah compression socks with my brand new Special Edition New Balance runDisney shoes.

KT Tape Pro, Zensah Compression Socks, and New Balance runDisney Running Shoes

And then it was time for food. Obviously everyone had finished a half marathon a few hours before, so the restaurants in Downtown Disney were quite crowded. Kelly and I settled on Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen for our breakfast {brunch}.

Untitled

Kelly had a burger and I was a total glutton and had bananas foster fresh toast. DELICIOUS! It was like eating candy…totally bad for me.

Bananas Foster French Toast from Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen
A little close-up of the rad medal from the race. This is the reason I hobbled for another 9 miles after I hurt my knee!

Disney's Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2013

I went to my regular doctor a few days after the race plus a chiropractor/physical therapist. I figured out what my knee problem was, my psoas.  And I ran again, two weeks later. The Surf City Half Marathon was my next race after Tinker Bell Half Marathon. I ran without injury, PR’ed, and eventually I might even blog about it.

Although I might have endured myself, I love doing runDisney races and can’t wait to do the next one. I would love to return to Walt Disney World later this Fall to do the Wine and Dine Half, to get my Coast to Coast medal, but we will see…

Painting Castles with Timree Gold

I learned about Timree Gold and her awesome painting skills when I was a member of the Junior League of Orange County. Timree had a booth at their annual Christmas Company boutique. I need that she has always had fun things to sell, but she also has a studio where she holds painting classes.

My friend Erin had her daughter’s birthday party at Timree’s studio, and had a fun painting class for all of the guests. Erin is always great for birthday and/or any type of party planning, she goes all out!

So anyway, I’m a fan of Timree’s Facebook Page, and I love to see all of the upcoming classes and events that she offers. I saw that she posted a “new paint class” with a castle, perhaps Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland. I immediately screen shot the picture and sent it to Kelly with a text similar to “must go, we need to do this” or something sorta like that. She agreed.

We waited for the paint class to come up, and boom we missed it. It sold out immediately. Luckily, she added two more classes and we were able to attend one last Tuesday night. She usually has about six people attend the class at a time, but Kelly and I were the only ones that signed up that night. Lucky us, we had a semi-private painting class!

Painting Class with Timree Gold, Disney CastlePhoto via Kelly

Timree’s example castle.

As we arrived, Timree had everything set-up for our class in advance; the paints, brushes, water, canvas and her example painting. Kelly and I were a bit afraid that our castles wouldn’t look as good as Timree’s. She explained what the different size paint brushes were and how we would use them in our paintings. She briefly sketched a small outline of a castle tower on our canvas’ and the led us to the next step. We made a light gray paint by mixing black and white to outline the castle.

Paint for our Castle Pictures

Took a painting class @timreegold studio with @according2kelly tonight. This was the beginning.

Obviously the sketching is a bit rough but it was just a start. Although I kept looking at the original and thought, “hmmm will mine turn out just as good?” Although I was skeptical, I kept following Timree’s directions….and hoping that it would turn out.

Castle in Progress
It looked a little rough once I started adding color. I was having issues getting points at the top of my castle. Timree had to help me. Plus my sky was almost black so we added in some blue and purple to make it better. We learned it is all about making it choppy, which makes it look better.

After filling in the colors on the castle, we added all of the little details like the greenery, gold trim, flags, and of course the fireworks. I think my picture turned out pretty snazzy. Timree showed how you put the picture on a wall/shelf etc. and look at it from afar. It totally makes a huge different when you look at it that way. It takes away all of the imperfections that I see.

"In this timeless land of enchantment, the age of chivalry, magic and make-believe are reborn and fairy takes come true."-Walt Disney. I did this all by myself, ok maybe I got a little help from @timreegold. #disney #disneyland

I even signed my official work of art!! Kelly and I were pretty jazzed after our first painting glass and now we want to attend more. Now, I’m just figuring out where I can put all of these awesome works of art.

@according2kelly taking a picture of her artwork

I caught Kelly taking an Instagram picture of her masterpiece. Kelly is always good for framing and get the “right” picture for Instagram. No wonder she has so many followers

Timree Gold's StudioBefore we left Timree’s studio, I had to take some additional pictures of all the awesome. Seriously the quote from Pink on the wall was so awesome.  And I loved all the different types of pictures and products that Timree has. I seriously can’t wait to attend another one of her classes soon. It was so much fun and a great girl’s night out!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’m hoping that you had a great day so far! I started off the day with a 5 mile run with my pal, Heather. Although it is decent weather here in Southern California, we whined about the cold….the entire run! We also whined about getting up early {we met up at 5:45am}, and the super fast runners that kept passing us. But in the end, the miles flew by and I arrived home at 7am with today’s run done.

Happy Valentine’s Day To Everyone!

I sent the kid to school today in a boy-themed Valentine’s Day shirt. I’m lucky that I can still get him to wear shirts like this. It’s only a matter of time folks. He’s growing up so fast.

My Valentine was very serious this morning.

I volunteered at my son’s class party. Lots of chaos, as usual. I helped with a bookmark craft project, which involved threading beads onto a string and tying tiny knots. My hands are way too chunky and clumsy for a chore like this. I ended up taking some pictures after I was done tying the tiny knots onto the bookmarks. Oy….why are these Holiday crafts so time consuming, and involve way too much adult help?

Valentine's Day cards are done for my son! 3rd year in a row I went handmade. Thanks to @knittybitties for the idea {I'm a copycat} and Paging Supermom {supermommoments.com} for the printable. #valentinesday #handmade

My son {age 7, second grade} took these Valentine’s to hand out at school. This is the 3rd year in a row, that he has taken handmade cards/items. Even my husband has turned into a snob. He says, blah….get some creativity people when he saw the normal store bought cards. HAHAHA!

We {I, me} made these items super fast. They were easy once I had all of the supplies at hand. My son absolutely loved them!! I found them on Paging Supermom. I made these photo cards in Kindergarten, and the fish bowl cards in first grade.

My son came home with a TON of Valentine’s Day stuff in his backpack this year, the most I’ve ever seen. It was almost like Halloween again. Of course, he had already eaten all the good candy, the kid is smart.

I’m going to relax the rest of the night. We have nothing special planned, and I’m ok with that. Honestly….

Do you do anything special for Valentine’s Day?
